Hawks shutout by York on the road - Athletics & Recreation

Laurier: 0 York: 4

TORONTO (September 1, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of the York Lions on Saturday afternoon, the opening game of the season for both teams.

The Hawks were looking to improve on their 2011 season after a 7th place finish in the Western conference of the OUA earning only four wins in their season. They faced a tough opponent in the York Lions who finished last season with the best record in the CIS.

The Lions started up again right where they left off coming out strong in the first half with York's Paramvir Sekhon of Mississauga, Ont., notching the Lions first goal of the season in the eighth minute.?

The Lions continued to play strong offensively and in the 13th minute the Laurier defence was stripped of the ball in a clearing attempt and Lions striker Adrian Pena of Woodbridge, Ont., was able to chip the ball past Hawks keeper Brett Harrington of Tillsonburg, Ont. That wouldn't be the last of York's first half offensive press however as in the 29 minute mark Sekhon would find the back of the net by heading a well place free kick from Pena.

The second half saw Laurier performing noticeably better against the York offence, limiting them to a single shot compared to the seven they had in the first half. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Lions made that one shot count and in the 69th minute, Mark Anthony Kane of Toronto, extended the lead to 4-0.

York keeper Sotiri Varlokostas of Toronto, earned the shutout as he turned away four Laurier attempts on goal. Harrington was credited with the loss after allowing four goals on eight shots.

The Golden Hawks will look to even out their record tomorrow in Guelph when they take on the Gryphons at 3:15 p.m.
