News Summary: Union members split over AA contract

THE VOTE: Ground workers at American Airlines split over whether to accept a contract proposal that the airline called its "last, best" offer.

THE SPLIT: Bag handlers, dispatchers, ground school instructors, maintenance-control technicians and simulator technicians voted for the deal with its small pay raises, profit sharing and promise of fewer layoffs. The biggest group - mechanics, along with clerks - voted "No." All seven groups are represented by the Transport Workers Union, which remained neutral.

WHAT'S NEXT: American is asking a bankruptcy judge to throw out contracts with pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and clerks. A decision is expected in early June.
