White House announces anti-botnet initiative

The White House has been drumming up momentum for tighter internet privacy laws for a while now, and today it's furthering that online safety agenda with a new initiative for combating botnets. Washington just announced a pilot program for fighting viruses, citing a whopping five million PCs infected worldwide this year. The program will use principles outlined by the Industry Botnet Group, with the main goal being to educate internet users on the dangers of cyberspace while preventing botnets from spreading by sharing data about infected computers. The White House is working with the Information Sharing and Analysis Center to develop and implement the "botnet pilot," presumably to enact those anti-virus principles.

Santa Monica College?s spring musical RENT premiered to a sold out crowd at last Thursday?s preview. Through the performance the audience was treated to coming-of-age songs and carefully choreographed dances from the award winning musical about the trials and tribulations of the bohemian lifestyle of New York City in the late 1980?s.

There is no doubting the original musical?s cultural significance. It was creator Johnathan Larson?s darling that reached popularity of epic proportions with a Tony Award, a Pulitzer Prize and a film adaptation. For 12 years, the show ran on Broadway and brought the AIDS epidemic to mainstream audiences.

And that should be enough to make SMC?s production a guaranteed hit.

Unfortunately, it missed the mark. It felt unprepared. It felt rushed and insincere. It was like a caricature of its original self, and it made me sad. Former sensuality was now raunchy, raw and unpolished?singers fell flat frequently and the additions and subtractions made by director Dr. Adrianne Harrop left some in the audience confused.

Issues with the audio of the backing band distracted from the performance on more than one occasion. In some places the singers? vocals were too quiet to be heard over the bombast of the backing band?s drummer.

The highly melodic libretto of the show is based in joy in the face of adversity. The characters? lives are rough. Though they struggle with AIDS, alienation and poverty they are vibrant, exuberant and cunning. SMC?s production didn?t fully embody this; with the exception of Felix Omar who portrayed Angel, there were moments when the cast seemed tired. Perhaps that can be attributed to the fact that RENT, with highly dynamic music numbers and non-stop dancing is a?physically?demanding musical to perform.

Omar, however, absolutely killed it. I was blown away by his embodiment of the character. Angel is complex ? Omar must play his vivaciousness in drag numbers, charisma in and fearlessness in death. He danced like a madman and easily stole the show during Today 4 U and La Vie Boehme.

SMC Musical veteran Carlos Padilla portrayed Roger who had the strongest voice out of the whole cast. It was clear, powerful and emotive. The full house jumped at the opportunity to participate in Diana Guzman?s stunningly esoteric rendition of Maureen?s ?Over the Moon? protest moo-along.

The highlight of the night was the ensemble?s rendition of Seasons of Love and La Vie Boehme. Cast members shined in these numbers that felt cohesive, honest aqnd deliberate. The minimalism of the musical backing here may have lent to their clarity and enjoyment.

However, something that happened off stage at the performance became the most memorable part of our evening, though it shouldn?t have.?Our humble group of two had saved two seats next to ours for our friends who were running late.

Close to the beginning of the show, a woman approached from the back of the theater and took issue with the jackets we had placed over the adjacent seats. ?You can?t do this!? she bellowed meanly, ?I?m the director!?

She was. More words were exchanged as we explained we were waiting for our friends who had been caugbht up outside. While she was irate, she acquiesced?albeit begrudgingly?when we pointed out more open seats directly behind us.

It wasn?t a great way to start the show. Her behavior was rude and unprofessional, and left me with a feeling of helplessness and anguish. We had been condescended to like rambunctious toddlers when we had really done nothing wrong or unusual.

The others in the audience in our area looked at her, shocked. All of our moods had changed. As the face of her production, she did a great disservice to the show, her cast and the theater department.

It should go without saying that corporate protesting, debates about non-traditional love and the AIDS epidemic were as topical twenty years ago as they are today. RENT is a powerful musical even under the direction of Dr. Harrop, and I have high hopes for the cast members.

Just make sure you stay seated the entire time.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) ? A porn actor is wanted in a gruesome case of dismembered body parts that were mailed to different places including the headquarters of the Conservative Party of Canada, police said.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, is wanted for homicide, Montreal police said Wednesday at a news conference.

According to an official close to the investigation Magnotta worked as a porn actor and there is video of the crime. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk publicly about those details.

Magnotta, believed to originally be from Toronto, was renting an apartment in a working-class Montreal neighborhood. It was behind that building that police found a man's torso in a suitcase in a heap of garbage Tuesday, police said. That same day, a foot was found in a package mailed to the Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa, and a hand found at postal warehouse in the Canadian capital. The package with the hand was addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada. Early testing shows the three body parts come from the same man, police said.

Police in masks combed through the blood-soaked Montreal studio apartment on Wednesday. A blood stained mattress remained there after they left.

"For most of the officers that were there all night long this is the kind of crime scene they've never seen in their career," Montreal Police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said.

Lafreniere said they are investigating the possibility that other body parts might have been mailed. He said the suspect and the victim knew each other. He said it isn't linked to organized crime.

The packages with the foot and the hand had been mailed to Ottawa from Montreal. It wasn't clear why.

"As a father, I would have trouble sleeping at night knowing that the suspect was in my neighborhood," Lafreniere said.

Police said Magnotta is also known by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov. They described him as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall (1.78 meters) with blue eyes and black hair.

His internet presence indicates he is a bisexual porn actor and model.

Police discovered the severed foot after Jenni Bryne, a top political adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, opened a bloodstained box at Conservative party headquarters Tuesday.

When Bryne opened the box, a foul odor overcame the office.

"It was such a horrible odor. I'm sure many of us will not forget it," Conservative Party spokesman Fred DeLorey said.

Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person.

Canada Post wouldn't comment on the discoveries.

Eric Schorer, the manager of the building where the suspect lived, said Magnotta had been living there for about four months but hadn't been seen around in a while. He said there were never any complaints about noise in the unit, and that Magnotta passed a credit test to rent there.

"He seemed like a nice guy," Schorer said.

Richard Payette, who lived across the hall from Magnotta, said the door of Apartment 208 was left open for part of the day on Wednesday. Payette said there was an overwhelming smell drifting out into the hallway, like bad meat.

An online video showing a man that looks like Magnotta shows him committing violent acts against kittens. The video contains at least one photo made available by Montreal police Wedesday that identified the man as Magnotta. For nearly two years, the name has been notorious among animal-rights activists looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of it online.

"It's very upsetting," Opposition New Democrat member Yvon Godin said. "It could be just one crazy person that did it, but at the same time we have lots of people unhappy in our country, the way the country is going."

Opposition Liberal member Justin Trudeau called the packages horrific.

SCE is the 1st utility to achieve the one million mark. The event was held at an Appliance Recycling Centers of America facility that recycles household refrigerators and freezers, using best accessible environmental practices.

As one of EPA's 47 RAD partners, SCE's recycling efforts have avoided emissions of in excess of 177,000 pounds of substances that harm the ozone layer, and about 3.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing 760,000 cars from the road.

A few weeks ago Gamestop announced a new business model in which they decided to start taking in trades of tablets and selling Macbooks. Looks like Gamefly took notice and decided to take it a step further and decided to develop their own games for iOS and Android platforms.

Video game rental service GameFly this week announced that it plans to begin publishing iOS and Android games in the upcoming months, and will launch its own Android app store.

In a?statement, GameFly said it plans to launch its App store for Android devices later this fall. It will be called the GameFly GameStore and should be ready for Android phones and tablets by this holiday season.

The company is also looking to partner with iOS and Android game developers. It has set aside a game development fund to work with independent mobile developers that are in the process of making a game, but need more money to publish and promote their titles.

?GameFly is dedicated to giving consumers the best user experience possible, and to be their single destination for console, PC and mobile gaming needs,? Sean Spector, GameFly cofounder and its senior vice president of business development and content, said in a statement. ?We plan to be a leading player in mobile games by launching our retail GameStore for Android and helping to fund mobile developers of all sizes to publish, promote and sell their smartphone and tablet games.?

GameFly is currently accepting proposals from mobile game developers, and expects to publish its first title this summer. The company instructed interested developers to email their submission to:?GameDev@GameFly.com.

The new Android store will complement GameFly?s existing free iOS and Android apps, which feature gaming news, reviews, and let users manage their accounts on the go.

?Hearing the words ?garbage bag? associated with kids bothered me,? he says. ?For me, it?s all about those who can, have a responsibility to take care of those who cannot.?

So Lamer, who is a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and employed with David Andrew Salon, started A Case for Kids. He collects luggage ? donations of new and used bags ? to give to LGBT foster kids.

Centering and Expressing: Communication | Mind Body Smile

Expressing ourselves honestly in any relationship is essential to our well-being.

When we are in a relationship where we feel listened to and understood, we count ourselves lucky because we know how rare that experience is. We reserve our most intimate selves for the people who, along with us, cocreate an open space where we feel free to express ourselves and listen without judgment. These relationships, which thrive on open communication, can mean the difference between existential loneliness and a deep sense of belonging. We all long to feel heard, understood, and loved, and clear communication makes this possible.

Sometimes problems arise in the process of expressing how we feel, but it is always worth it to do the work. Even in our less intimate relationships, expressing ourselves honestly is essential to our sense of well-being. Whether at home with family or in the outside world, successful communication requires some forethought; otherwise we risk blundering through our relationships like the proverbial bull in a china shop. However, too much forethought can stifle us or cause us to pad our words so extremely that we end up saying nothing at all or confusing the matter further. The good news is that there are many methods that can come to our rescue, from meditation to visualization to journaling.

If the person we need to communicate with is open to sitting in meditation together for a set period of time before speaking, this can be invaluable. When we are calm and centered, we can count on ourselves to speak and respond truthfully. We can also meditate on our own time and then practice what we need to say. A visualization in which we sit with the person and lovingly exchange a few words can also be a great precedent to an actual conversation. If writing comes easily, we can write out what we need to say; it may take several drafts, but we will eventually find the words. The key is to find ways to center ourselves so that we communicate meaningfully, lovingly, and wisely. In this way, we honor our companions and create relationships in which there is a genuine sense of understanding and respect.

As the Spring weather brings runners back outdoors,?The Cornerstone Clubs?have been doing their part to combine that?inspiration?with the spirit of giving back. ?They recently hosted two events that promoted fitness and also gave?families?and individuals the opportunity to be part of the fight against childhood?obesity. Now that?s what we call?happening!

The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the US who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2008.

5k (and more) On May 5th

On May 5th, The Cornerstone Clubs hosted a triple threat event at their Warrington location designed for runners of all ages and levels, including a?Pump & Run, a 5K, and a 1-mile Fun Run. ?Awards were given to Overall 5K Males & Females, Age Group Top 3 Males and Females, Pump & Run Top 3 Males and Females. ?The event benefitted?iRun4life, a non-profit organization that assist?s elementary schools in promoting fun, non-competitive running programs that combat childhood obesity.

260 runners crossed the finish line, including 33 kids participating in the Fun Run! ?Congrats to those who placed including:

Top male, James Swasey with a time of 16:10.41
Top female, Jodi Bass, with a time of 18:53.50
Top male pumper was Tom Brown
Top female pumper with Lynda Terry

As an added bonus, Cornerstone had a special registration table this year with certificates and prizes for anyone running their first 5K. We are told they had about 25 first 5Kers! ?As an ?added? added bonus, Cornerstone debuted at the ?Nifty Fifty?? and provided every 50th?runner who crossed the finish line with a free month membership to Cornerstone! ?All in all, the event raised an estimated $8,000 for iRun4Life!

iRun4Life on May 20th

May 20th was the national iRun4Life Day. ?As an official sponsor, The Cornerstone Clubs hosted a race day at Central Park in Doylestown for K thru 6th grade students, with proceeds going to support the iRun4Life organization. ?To help the iRun4Life?s kids prepare for the big race, Cornerstone provided the elementary schools with frequent visits to discuss race preparation, provide education about health & exercise, and participate in healthy exercises. In addition, they supported a very special group of 6th graders, known as ?Cornerstone Captains? in?their last year of iRun4Life. ?The students were introduced to the practice and benefits of interval & functional training?through a weekly class at Cornerstone in Doylestown.
