'Martyr for Greece': Protests follow retiree's suicide

A mourner cries on Thursday at the spot where 77-year-old Dimitris Christoulas took his own life in Syntagma Square in Athens, Greece.

ATHENS?-- An elderly Greek's?suicide outside parliament has quickly become a symbol of the pain of austerity and has been seized upon by opponents of the budget cuts imposed by Greece's international lenders.

Dimitris Christoulas, 77,?shot himself in the head on Wednesday after declaring that financial troubles pushed him over the edge. A suicide note said?the retired pharmacist preferred to die than scavenge for food.

The highly public -- and symbolic -- nature of the suicide prompted an outpouring of sympathy from ordinary Greeks, who held a protest march and set up an impromptu shrine with notes condemning the crisis at the spot where he killed himself.

The BBC reported that violence flared at the demonstration on Wednesday night, with some protesters hurling Molotov cocktails at police. They responded by firing tear gas.

"As you walk around the streets of Athens and beyond you can see the social fabric tearing," the BBC's Mark Lowen said.

The conservative newspaper Eleftheros Typos called the victim a "martyr for Greece" and said his act was filled with "profound political symbolism" that could "shock Greek society and the political world and awaken their conscience" in the weeks before a parliamentary election that will determine Greece's future.

'Family man'
Anger was directed as much at politicians as it was at the austerity medicine prescribed by foreign lenders in return for aid to lift the country out of its worst economic crisis since the Second World War.

"It's horrible. We shouldn't have reached this point. The politicians in parliament who brought us here should be punished for this," said Anastassia Karanika, a 60-year-old retiree.

The head of the Attica Pharmacists' Union, Constantinos Lourantos reportedly told Skai radio that Christoulas was "a calm, family man."

With the tragedy occurring barely a month before elections are expected in Greece, smaller parties opposed to harsh spending cuts included in the country's second bailout were quick to point the finger at bigger parties backing the rescue.

"Those who should have committed suicide -- who should have committed suicide a long time ago -- are the politicians who knowingly decided to bring this country and its people to this state of affairs," said Panos Kammenos, a conservative lawmaker who recently set up the Independent Greeks anti-austerity party.

A protester throws a stone at police officers during rioting in Syntagma Square in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday night.
Greek police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters taking part in a rally commemorating the death of Dimitris Christoulas.

Smaller parties like the Independent Greeks have been riding high in opinion polls at the expense of the two main co-ruling parties, the conservative New Democracy and socialist PASOK, backing the bailout.

The two big parties are together expected to take less than 40 percent of the vote. Losing more voters to the smaller parties could put them at risk of not having enough seats in parliament to forge a pro-bailout coalition again.

That in turn would have profound implications for Greece's finances, given continued aid from European partners and the International Montary Fund is contingent on Greece's new government pushing through reforms demanded as part of the bailout.

Sorrow
New Democracy and PASOK, which have ruled Greece for decades, expressed their sorrow for the tragedy. Political opponents attacked them for joining in the mourning.

"Shame on them. The accomplices responsible for the suffering and despair of the Greek people ... should at least keep quiet in the face of the hideous results of the capitalist crisis and their policies, instead of pretending to be saviors and sensitive," the KKE Communist party said.

Resentment is growing in Greece over repeated rounds of wage and pension cuts that have compounded the pain from a slump which has seen the economy shrink by a fifth since 2008.

Unemployment has surged to a record 21 percent -- twice the eurozone average -- with one out of two young people without a job. The number of suicides has surged and many Greeks feel ordinary people like the retired pharmacist are being forced to pay for a crisis that was not of their making.

Economy-related suicides?hit Italy
Meanwhile,?an Italian man shot himself dead on Wednesday because his company was going bust, following a wave of economy-related suicides in the country which one opposition politician blamed on Prime Minister Mario Monti's reforms.

The 59-year-old Rome-based construction firm owner left a note apologizing to family members and explaining that his business had failed, police said.

A day earlier, a 78-year-old woman in Sicily jumped to her death because her monthly pension payments had been reduced. On Monday, a picture-frame maker hanged himself because of economic difficulties.

And last week, two men set themselves on fire in northern Italy due to financial woes. Both survived, one with severe burns.

Opposition politician Antonio Di Pietro, leader of the Italy of Values (IDV) party, criticized the government's reform agenda in parliament, and said Monti had the suicides of people who can't make it to the end of the month "on his conscience".

At a news conference on Wednesday, Monti refused to reply to the comments from Di Pietro, a fiery former anti-corruption magistrate, who was one of the harshest critics of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Italy is struggling with a recession, rising unemployment and increasingly severe austerity measures.

CipherUSB

Using Addonics's new CipherUSB ($29.95, direct) device you can apply hardware-based full-disk encryption to any storage device that connects via USB. It works with flash drives, external hard drives, CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives?the device type doesn't matter as long as it connects via USB. It's a brilliantly simple solution.

You can use CipherUSB under any operating system that supports USB, but the tiny utility that sets its master password is Windows-specific. You only enter the master password once, so make it a very, very strong password and stash a copy somewhere protected, perhaps a safe deposit box. The only time you might need that password again is if you lose the CipherUSB device. Entering the same password in a replacement CipherUSB will restore access to your encrypted drives.

The first time you connect a device to the computer through the CipherUSB, you'll have to format it. There's no option to encrypt existing content in place. If you later connect the encrypted drive directly to the computer, without the CipherUSB, it will appear to be a blank, unformatted drive.

Using hardware-based, FIPS-certified AES 256-bit encryption, the CipherUSB encrypts all data written to the protected drive and decrypts all data read from the drive. Addonics claims it has no measureable effect on read/write speeds, and indeed I couldn't measure any slowdown.

Advanced Protection
The basic 256-bit AES encryption is considered secure enough to protect Top Secret information. According to Addonics, "It is theoretically impossible to penetrate the encryption of a single CipherUSB." However, it's completely possible to daisy-chain two or more CipherUSB devices for added complexity. Here's an intriguing possibility for shared secrets. If you and a partner each own a CipherUSB and use both to encrypt a drive, neither of you can access the drive's data without cooperation.

Other Avenues
Like Aegis Secure Key ($65 direct, 4.5 stars) and LOK-IT Secure Flash Drive ($76.25 direct, 4 stars), CipherUSB works with any device that support USB-based storage. Unlike the other two products, it protects any number of USB storage devices.

GoldKey Consumer Token ($59 direct, 4 stars) doesn't come with on-board storage, but you can use it to encrypt multiple files, folders, or drives. IronKey Personal S200 ($79 direct, 4 stars) protects its on-board storage using hardware encryption and also comes with password management software and a secure browser.

CipherUSB's low price and simplicity make it a great choice for managing encrypted storage. You can use it to protect anything from a single thumb drive to an office full of removable hard drives. CipherUSB has earned the status of Editors' Choice for hardware-based security, along with Aegis Secure Key and GoldKey Consumer Token.

Scientists track radioactive iodine in New Hampshire from Japan nuclear reactor meltdown

ScienceDaily (Apr. 2, 2012) ? Radioactive iodine found by Dartmouth researchers in the local New Hampshire environment is a direct consequence of a nuclear reactor's explosion and meltdown half a world away, says Joshua Landis, a research associate in the Department of Earth Science. The failure of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility, following the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami, was the largest nuclear disaster since 1986 at Chernobyl. "We live on a really small planet and this demonstrates that what happens in Japan has the potential to affect us."

Landis and a team drawn from Dartmouth's Department of Earth Science and Department of Geography recently published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences addressing such concerns.

"Though regrettable, the Japanese catastrophe did provide a unique opportunity to examine the transport and accumulation of radioactive iodine in the environment," Landis says. "We took up this study mostly as concerned scientists in our own right, wondering how much of this contaminant is really coming down, and where the iodine is moving in the landscape."

The paper reports that testing in New Hampshire's Mink Brook watershed during March through May 2011 showed the amount of radioactive iodine deposition in the soil was minimal, with calculations revealing the total amount to be on the order of 6,000 atoms per square meter. Landis comments that "at these levels, it is unlikely that this is going to cause measurable health consequences."

However, sampling of Mink Brook stream sediments showed a doubling of iodine concentrations relative to what was found in soils. But even in these concentrations, stream and river transport are expected to result in significant dilution.

The radioisotope iodine-131, a significant constituent of the fallout, is a by-product of nuclear fission, highly radioactive, acutely toxic and presents a health risk upon its release to the environment. It does have a relatively short half-life, which is both a blessing and a curse, Landis notes. "It releases a lot of radioactivity, which makes it dangerous, but it's gone very quickly so there is no long term exposure risk," he says. Its high radioactivity, however, makes it very detectable by the gamma-ray spectroscopy instruments used by the Dartmouth team in its analyses.

This is not the case with another isotope, iodine-129, released concurrently with iodine-131. It is not as radioactive, which makes it much harder to measure, but it is much longer lasting and, as it concentrates in certain areas over time, it may become more hazardous. "Due to its long half-life and continued release from ongoing nuclear energy production, [iodine-129] is perpetually accumulating in the environment and poses a growing radiological risk," the authors point out.

The production rate of these two isotopes in a nuclear reactor occurs at a fixed ratio of 3 parts iodine-131 to one part iodine-129. The two substances travel together, so the presence of the easily detectable isotope also signals the presence of the longer-lived one. "If you have a recent event like Fukushima, you are going to have both present. The iodine-131 is going to decay away pretty quickly over the course of weeks, but the iodine-129 is there forever, essentially," Landis says. However, he explains, "Once the iodine-131 decays, you lose your ability to track the migration of either isotope."

Thus, the group's research turned toward the development of an innovative alternative approach to measuring and tracking the iodine. What became an important off-shoot of their work was the methodology of using the benign radioisotope, beryllium-7, as the tracking indicator. It's an easily detected natural radionuclide, and is routinely used by the Dartmouth researchers in their environmental analyses.

The Dartmouth researchers have shown that beryllium-7 follows the same transport paths as the iodine isotopes. By ascertaining the ratio of association of the beryllium to the iodine, tracing the beryllium-7 as it moves through the environment then allowed the researchers to track the parallel transport of iodine, and to demonstrate the accumulation of iodine fallout in stream sediments.

Britain Wants To Monitor Everyone's E-Mails And ... - Business Insider

Britain may soon allow its intelligence agencies to monitor all phone calls, texts, emails and online activities in the country to help tackle crime and terrorism, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday, Reuters reports.

Internet companies would have to install hardware which would allow the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) to gain real-time access to data. Although GCHQ would not have access to the content of emails, calls, or messages without a warrant, it would be able to trace who an individual or group was in contact with, how often they communicated, and for how long.

"What we do need to make sure is that as technology changes we are able to maintain our current capability in this area," a government spokesman told the BBC, adding that communications data was used to help solve 95 percent of serious crime and terrorism cases.

The new legislation is expected to be announced in the legislative agenda-setting speech given by the Queen on May 9. Currently, British agencies can only monitor calls and e-mails of specific individuals who are under investigation after obtaining ministerial approval.

The proposal has drawn strong criticism, both from civil liberties groups and from within the ruling Conservative Party, as an invasion of privacy and personal rights, and it will likely face stiff opposition in parliament.

"What the government hasn't explained is precisely why they intend to eavesdrop on all of us without even going to a judge for a warrant," MP David Davis told BBC News. Nick Pickles, director of campaign group Big Brother Watch, called the move "an unprecedented step that will see Britain adopt the same kind of surveillance seen in China and Iran".
