Cheat on taxes? Not cool, say most Americans

IRS Oversight Board

Most Americans don't think it's OK to cheat on taxes.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Americans may make plenty of jokes about cheating on their taxes, but a new survey finds that in reality most don?t think it?s OK to rob the tax man. Or at least, that?s what they?re telling the IRS Oversight Board.

The?2012 Taxpayer Attitude Survey, released Tuesday by the independent oversight board, finds that 87 percent of Americans don?t think it?s OK to cheat on your taxes. That?s a 3 percentage point increase from last year.

Only 11 percent think it?s OK to cheat, either a little or as much as possible.

Perhaps more surprising, 95 percent of Americans said their personal integrity influences them to report their taxes honestly, an 8 percentage point increase from five years earlier.

About 63 percent said they are influenced by fear of an audit, while 70 percent are motivated by third-party information that could show them to be a tax cheat.

The IRS Oversight Board, an independent body created by Congress in 1998 to oversee the Internal Revenue Service?s actions, completed its annual survey of 1,500 Americans last August and September. The survey has a 3.1 percent margin of error.

If they?re going to pay their taxes honestly, most Americans seem to think everyone else should, too.

The survey found that more than 90 percent of Americans think it?s important that the IRS ensures that low- and high-income taxpayers, small businesses and corporations honestly pay their taxes, too.

Those results appear to show that Americans have come to feel more strongly in recent years that everyone should pay their fair share of taxes, and the IRS should vigorously enforce tax laws.

The results come as many Americans are either getting ready to file their 2012 income tax returns, or already have done so.

They also follow a bruising battle in Washington over the so-called fiscal cliff, a series of tax hikes and spending cuts that were scheduled to take effect until Congress reached a last-minute deal.

The fiscal cliff agreement raised taxes for wealthy Americans earning $400,000 or more and allowed taxes on capital gains and dividends to go up. It also ended a payroll tax holiday, meaning that most Americans are seeing more of their paycheck going to the tax man for Social Security and other entitlements this year.

How honest should people be on their tax returns?

Video: Sequester scuffle: Washington remains gridlocked

>>> gridlock and that's where we stand tonight. no closer to a deal to avoid the automatic spending cuts set to take effect this friday. just like democrats and republicans in washington, the public has mixed views on just what to do about the deficit and the budget. let me show you some new numbers from our own nbc/" wall street journal " poll just out tonight. we asked how americans feel about the president's budget negotiations with republicans in congress. do they make people feel more or less confident about the economy. 51% said it made them less confident. it's hurting people's confidence in the economy and it could have a real impact on our lives. on the spending cuts scheduled to take effect on friday, 52% said they are a bad idea, but 53% think congress should deal with the deficit with friday's scheduled cuts or plan even more cuts. in other words, they're complicated on this. the public doesn't like the idea of automatic spending cuts but if they had to choose, these spending cuts but more spending cuts. and when asked which statement is more in line with their thoughts on the cuts, the country looks pretty evenly divided. 50% say the cuts are too severe. 46% say it's time for dramatic measures to reduce the deficit. those numbers if you look at them reflect the whole numbers, 50% being obama and 46% being roughly romney. with numbers like that, what do you do if you're president obama or speaker bonn janer. i have two former mex of the house of representatives . republican steve latourette , thank you. congresswoman thank you so much. i'm going to put you in a difficult position to be president obama right now. he's given so many speeches. his wife is all over the police. mrs. obama is on every show including the academy awards . they're getting a lot of popularity but it's kind of thin. it's nice, good, it's happy but what does that have to do with getting a deal with the republicans who are insistent on no new revenues?

>> you know, i think -- i think actually let me add on to what you were saying. 27% of the public says that they're not even interested in it anymore. i don't know. i don't know where to go. if i were doing it i would say let's look at bowles simpson, simpson/bowles a and b. what are we doing? where should the cuts be? the military says of that cuts can be had with a scalpel, not with a cleaver. 20 years ago when i was in congress, i said let's talk about entitlements. we've never really debt with entitlements except on the margins. that's what i would be doing if i were president.

>> okay.

>> i would --

>> the president says he will do it after the republicans do their thing on tax reform and raise some revenues. then he says i'll look at reforming medicare and medicaid. so it's a sequence thing. sure, i'll do. it's like i say in this terrible metaphor, it's like there's been a kidnapping and you wan the baby back and you have to give the money to the kidnappers. where do you do the drop? how do you make it xhult because nobody trusts anybody? congressman, your thoughts. you're now mr. boehner . cries occasionally. you have to play him. your friend. can he cut a deal?

>> yes, he can.

>> what would be the deal he'd cut with the president?

>> he was close to a deal a year ago august in 2011 on the debt ceiling limit, and he was pulled back by his folks more conservative folks and the president was pulled off the cliff, too, if you look at bob woodward 's book as to how that thing unraveled. they both have to channel. he needs to channel tip o'neill and the prids needs to channel ronald reagan and they have to do things. people talk about it it was wonderful, it was bliss, it was euphoria. but they made tough choices. they raise the age of social security , and they raised revenues and the only way you solve this problem is through the big deal .

>> don't you have to be big to do a big deal .

>> yeah, but these are the leaders --

>> is your leader your leader? i don't think boehner is your leader?

>> he is my leader. but not anymore i'm retired.

>> i don't think he calls the shots.

>> i don't agree with that. he calls the shots. he has 20 or 30 that came in in 2010 and that are going to vote no. it's final to forget those guys.

>> has he done that.

>> he did it at the end of the year. when they rejected plan b he broke the hastert rule and put it on the floor.

>> we heard some harsh words from speaker boehner and nancy pelosi this morning. let's hear what they had to say on the latest.

>> i don't think the president's focused on trying to find a solution to the sequester. for 16 months the president has been troofling all over the country holding rallies instead of sitting down with senate leaders in order to try to forge an agreement over there in order to move the bill. we have moved the bill in the house twice. we should not have to move a third bill before the senate gets off their [ bleep ] and begins to do something.

>> the republican leadership says let the senate begin. i remind them the constitution says appropriations and revenue bills must begin in the house. so we have important work to do, the american people want us to work together. most people don't even know what the word sequester means. sequestration equals unemployment. sequestration we don't want it.

>> you know what i think, marjorie, and this is my big concern, that both parties no longer competitive with each other. there's no common group of voters like there used to be reagan democrats , conservative people, a lot of catholics and conservative jewish people that switched back and forth, and therefore you could compete for that clump of voters. therefore, smart politician would say let's try to get that center. today the democrats -- and the republicans play to the conservatives and the districts are all gerrymanders and nobody wants to go to the middle. and i don't hear boehner going to the middle and i don't hear the president and that is a problem because i like the president.

>> and there's huge frustration even with members. bob brady , children of the city committee and head of the house administrations committee says that he is absolutely -- it's more than frustrated. he's revolted. he can't believe -- he cannot believe that nothing -- he said it's tied up with leadership and members of congress are walking around saying what the hell is going on? frustration is all around. the sequestration would almost be comical if it were not affecting to many people. kind of like patriot deucers. let's do it, nobody will like it, the show will never open, and it's there. and i think the public has crisis fatigue. what are we going to do with it? the cr is coming in a month. they have the debt crisis in the wings. people are just frustrated, and i think members of congress , members are extremely frustrated, too.

>> well, i think the president went out there campaigning thinking that the republican party would never go along with defense cuts because it's a hawkish party, and what do you know you're seeing people like buck mckoen saying i'll take the cuts if i can get some domestic cuts. miscalculation by the president? ?

>> miscalculation to put sequester in place. if this is the wake-up call and it sobers people up, you can make the big deal still and get it done. to your point on the districts in marjorie's state a guy name tim holden , a great guy, he lost because he wasn't a good enough democrat. and the same thing happens in my party. the biggest challenge we face now are primaries on the right or left. it's not november anymore.

>> that's a problem.

>> it is.

>> thank you very much, congressman. thanks for coming. congresswoman margolis, i have always respected you.

>>> up next, how did first lady michelle obama end up announcing the academy award winner for best picture . how oscar's biggest secret stayed that way. he was surprised at the very moment of it. and this is "hardball," the place

A Family that Eats Together, Stays Healthy Together | balanced care

Image

Studies have shown that there are significant benefits of sitting down for dinner as a family. Families tend to eat healthier meals at home, have better communication with their children (especially important during the teenage years), less adolescent problem behavior, less disordered eating problems, and have less problems with obesity. A Minnesota study showed that cooking dinner at home vs ordering take-out or eating out, also results in lower body fat, cholesterol, and insulin levels. The odds of being obese or overweight were greatly increased when families consumed even just 1 restaurant meal per week for dinner.

There is a clear association between?better family relationships?and those who eat dinner together, but its also important to eat the best foods to keep your family healthy. Dr. Katie can help you make sure the right foods are on your plates!

Emer O'Kelly: Irish society must ensure State delivers compensation to survivors

The social structure that allowed for forced labor and misery in Magdalene Laundries to occur is part of the Irish psyche, according to Sunday's Irish Independent Op Ed.

Writing for the newspaper, journalist Emer O?Kelly states that the Irish society should feel guilty for perpetuating a system that allowed for women to be sent to Magdalene Laundries.

?The stigma is ours, and ours alone, to be shared by all of us except the women victimized and brutalized by Irish society as a whole. That the women could have perceived themselves as bearing a stigma for their incarceration reflects on us, not on them,? O?Kelly states.

?The catalogue of miseries Ireland has inflicted on the helpless and hopeless over the generations since independence is as long as it is sickening. With each new revelation, each parading of repressed grief and hurt, each dreadful witness to our inhumanity, we have squirmed and exempted ourselves from blame.?

Last Tuesday Irish leader Enda Kenny apologized to an estimated 10,000 women who were forced into unpaid labor from 1922 to 1996.

Delivering an official apology in the Irish parliament, he told the women and their families, ?This is a national shame for which I say again I am deeply sorry and offer my full and heartfelt apologies.?

According to O?Reilly, one of the short fallings of the Senator Martin McAleese? 1,000 page report was to suggest women were self-referred to the laundries.

?Was a destitute woman thrown on the street by her parents "willing" when her choice was between selling herself or a hell-hole of slave labour?

?Was a motherless child "willing" when a Catholic priest took her from the care of her widowed father because to have her free in society left her open to "moral hazard"?

?If every woman still alive who was ever locked in one of those dark, fearful places was a prostitute; if every woman there had given birth to children "out of wedlock", there should still be no "stigma". They were human, that's all: human like the rest of us. And they were ignorant of the world and its ways, the ignorance as enforced as was their incarceration.?

O?Reilly describes Irish society in the past as a closed society: ?an engineered regimentation of the population that described ignorance as innocence, and equated deprivation with purity and nobility of soul: the essence of fascism.?

The column described a joyless Ireland during the Magdalene years when the Church had a stronghold over the country and highlights the terrible conditions they were forced to work under.

Why Your Real Estate Farming Practices Are Outdated | Leading ...

Since my company?s inception, in 1997, not a month goes by that we don?t run into at least three to four Real Estate Agents that claim postcard farming is useless and a waste of time and money.

Because I?m a naturally curious person, I feel compelled to dig into this, ask some questions, and find out if things truly are as they seem, or if there may be something else afoot, that could simply be overlooked by the Realtor?.

Over the years, we?ve noticed that there are some common thoughts that come up time and time again. All these things, I would put under the category of using ?Outdated Real Estate Farming Practices?, and not actually problems with Farming a neighborhood with postcards.

With a few small tweaks, these agents could actually be very successful with their Real Estate Postcard Farming Program. To those ends, today, I thought I would share the three most common mistakes we see that can be tweaked, and avoided, turning your Real Estate Farming efforts into immediate successes.

1) If you aren?t tracking your response rates with your Postcard marketing, how can you truly say postcard farming isn?t effective?

This one comes up time and time again. In fact, this has always been the most fascinating part of the Real Estate Industry to me. Unlike any other industry in Corporate America, the Real Estate Industry at large seems to be accepting of conducting long term, very expensive postcard marketing campaigns, without any true way to track ROI.

If I were to go into Pepsi, for instance, pitch my marketing plan and when asked how we would gauge success or ROI, say, ?I Don?t Know?, I would get tossed out of the meeting. They would be right to do so, because it?s simply unheard of to not have any plan for tracking marketing results.

If major corporations refuse to throw money out to simply be ?visible?, you should too!

So how to you track your postcard farming program? While there are many ways you can, my favorite path is always the one that is automated.

Take for instance a program like our LeadingAgent Neighorhood Capture System. With the use of a variable data key code (capture code), and a hook to get the homeowner to go back to your website for an item of value, you can easily track response rate.

Whatever system you use, hopefully it?s intuitive enough that the capture code is not only unique to the homeowner?s address, but ALSO the actual marketing piece. By having that feature, you can not only track overall effectiveness of your marketing campaigns, but also the effectiveness of a particular marketing piece, vs. other pieces in your campaign.

When you actually start tracking results, you may be very surprised to find out that your campaign wasn?t broken at all. You just didn?t know where your deals were coming from. Conversely, if you find out that your postcard campaign indeed is not effective, this gives you a quick way to find out, without wasting a bunch of money, and allowing you to make tweaks, to get your campaign firing on all cylinders.

2) Neighborhood Demographics Have Changed, But Your Marketing Content Didn?t

There is a saying that ?If you stop for lunch, you become lunch?. This saying can apply to your Real Estate Farming techniques. You see, in the past 10-15 years, across many of America?s cities, home values have risen dramatically. As the home values have rose, many aging homeowners chose to sell their homes, taking advantage of the high prices, and downsize to a smaller home, retirement community, etc.

Who moved into these homes? In the Silicon Valley, where our offices are based, for instance, many young, high tech executives moved into these homes. They were doing very well with stock options and great salaries and decided to settle down, buy a home close to their company and start a family.

If you are a Realtor? that didn?t notice these changes, the problem here, is that in a flash, the demographics of your marketplace changed. As a result of these changes, what used to interest the people you were marketing to, simply doesn?t cut it anymore.

Take for instance the recipe card. If you farm area has shifted to young, well educated professionals, recipe cards are the very worst thing you can send them. Instead for instance, maybe you would focus on market stats related postcards that truly analyze what is going on. Or, since your target group has trended to the younger, more active segment of the population, maybe value added pieces that detail events and activities they can take advantage of, in the area they live.

Learn about your marketplace, give them what they want, and you will be successful.

3) Relentless Consistency Has Become The Name Of The Game

In the last 10-15 years, more than ever, mass media has hit a fever pitch. Americans are given so many marketing messages throughout the day, at such a rapid pace, and the internet has given us such an ?on demand? style of living that we have simply had our attention spans reduced to that of the mosquito.

Time and time again we hear from Realtors? that say they mailed postcards religiously to a farm area, year after year and it yielded zero results. Come to find out, when we dig a bit and ask them how frequently they were sending cards, we most commonly hear, ?twice a year?, ?every quarter?, or at best, ?every other month?.

THIS WILL NOT WORK

In today?s marketplace, if you want to have a successful geographic postcard marketing campaign, you have to send postcards to your farm area a minimum of once per month. If you can afford to start out more frequently, all the better. Any less than every four weeks will make you irrelevant in the minds of homeowners in your farm area(s), therefore making your postcard campaign a complete loss.

You work hard on your marketing messages. Don?t let something as easily solvable as consistency be the thing that ruins your campaign.

So there you have it. These of course are just the three most common things we hear from Realtors? when discussing postcard farming practices and why they think this form of marketing doesn?t work. There are many others we have encountered though, and thankfully, they all have simple solutions as those detailed above.

Do you need help analyzing your current postcard marketing campaign and want to figure out how to get it back on track? Have you completely stopped postcard farming and want to see about getting a campaign up and running? Have you never participated in this form of marketing and would like to learn ?best practices?, before getting started? Contact me anytime, and I would be more than happy to help you in any way I can.

In Germany, Kerry defends Americans 'right to be stupid'

BERLIN (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry offered a defense of freedom of speech, religion and thought in the United States on Tuesday telling German students that in America "you have a right to be stupid if you want to be."

"As a country, as a society, we live and breathe the idea of religious freedom and religious tolerance, whatever the religion, and political freedom and political tolerance, whatever the point of view," Kerry told the students in Berlin, the second stop on his inaugural trip as secretary of state.

"People have sometimes wondered about why our Supreme Court allows one group or another to march in a parade even though it's the most provocative thing in the world and they carry signs that are an insult to one group or another," he added.

"The reason is, that's freedom, freedom of speech. In America you have a right to be stupid - if you want to be," he said, prompting laughter. "And you have a right to be disconnected to somebody else if you want to be.

"And we tolerate it. We somehow make it through that. Now, I think that's a virtue. I think that's something worth fighting for," he added. "The important thing is to have the tolerance to say, you know, you can have a different point of view."

Kerry made the comments on his first foreign trip since becoming secretary of state on February 1. After one-night stops in London and Berlin, he visits Paris, Rome, Ankara, Cairo, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha before returning to Washington on March 6.

While speaking to the students and earlier to U.S. diplomats, Kerry reminisced about the time he spent in Berlin in the 1950s as the intrepid son of an American diplomat and retold a story of sneaking across to East Berlin with his bike.

"I used to have great adventures. My bicycle and I were best friends. And I biked all around this city. I remember biking down Kurfuerstendamm and seeing nothing but rubble. This was in 1954 ... the war was very much still on people's minds," he told the diplomats, referring to West Berlin's main shopping avenue.

"One day, using my diplomatic passport, I biked through the checkpoint right into the east sector and noticed very quickly how dark and unpopulated (it was) and sort of unhappy people looked," he added, saying it left an impression "that hit this 12-year-old kid."

"I kind of felt a foreboding about it and I didn't spend much time. I kind of skedaddled and got back out of there and went home and proudly announced to my parents what I had done and was promptly grounded and had my passport pulled," he added.

"As a 12-year-old, I saw the difference between East and West," he later told the students. "I never made another trip like that. But I have never forgotten it. And now, it's vanished, vanished."

Hubble sees a glowing jet from a young star

Feb. 24, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image showing an object known as HH 151, a bright jet of glowing material trailed by an intricate, orange-hued plume of gas and dust.

It is located some 460 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull), near to the young, tumultuous star HL Tau.

In the first few hundred thousand years of life, new stars like HL Tau pull in material that falls towards them from the surrounding space. This material forms a hot disc that swirls around the coalescing body, launching narrow streams of material from its poles. These jets are shot out at speeds of several hundred kilometers (or miles) per second and collide violently with nearby clumps of dust and gas, creating wispy, billowing structures known as Herbig-Haro objects -- like HH 151 seen in the image.

Such objects are very common in star-forming regions. They are short-lived, and their motion and evolution can actually be seen over very short timescales, on the order of years. They quickly race away from the newly-forming star that emitted them, colliding with new clumps of material and glowing brightly before fading away.

Microsoft says small number of its computers hacked

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Friday a small number of its computers, including some in its Mac software business unit, were infected with malware, but there was no evidence of customer data being affected and it is continuing its investigation.

The world's largest software company said the security intrusion was "similar" to recent ones reported by Apple Inc and Facebook Inc.

The incident, reported on one of the company's public blogs happened "recently", but Microsoft said it chose not to make any statement publicly while it gathered information about the attack.

"This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries," said Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Trustworthy Computing Security at Microsoft, in the company's blog post.

Over the past week or so, both Apple and Facebook said computers used by employees were attacked after visiting a software developer website infected with malicious software.

The attacks come at a time of broader concern about computer security.

Newspaper websites, including those of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, have been infiltrated recently. Earlier this month U.S. President Barack Obama issued an executive order seeking better protection of the country's critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.

Check Out The Whole History of Display Resolutions In One Big Stack

Computer screens have come a long, long way in the past decade and a half. With all these retina-grade, impossible-to-decern-the-pixels resolutions floating around, it's hard to believe we used to deal with displays as low as 640x480 back in the day. This is what all that resolution evolution looks like all in one place. More »

The ABCs of Twitter, Part II

In his book The Ultimate Guide to Twitter for Business, online marketing expert Ted Prodromou offers an easy-to-understand guide to using Twitter that will help small-business owners generate leads and connect with customers. In this edited excerpt, the author explains the most common Twitter terms so users can get up to speed right away. Part II of a two-part series. Read Part I.

In the first of our two-part series, we introduced you to the very specific language of Twitter. Let?s finish up our review of the most common Twitter terms so you?ll understand and recognize the words when you see them.

Reply
A Reply is a Tweet that is posted in reply to another user?s message. A Reply is usually posted by clicking the ?reply? button next to their Tweet in your timeline. A Reply always begins with @username. If the @username is not the first word in the Tweet, it is considered a Mention.

RT or ReTweet
When you like someone?s Tweet, you can forward it to your Twitter followers by ReTweeting it. I like to add comments to my ReTweets to let people know why I?m Tweeting it. This can get tricky if the original Tweet is very long because of the 140-character limit. Sometimes you just have to ReTweet it without a comment. ReTweeting is like forwarding a funny joke someone emailed to you, or sharing a Facebook post you like.

Search or Twitter Search
The box in the top right corner of your Twitter homepage is the Twitter Search box. Twitter Search lets you search all public Tweets for keywords, usernames, hashtags, or subjects. Searches can also be performed at http://search.twitter.com. Twitter Search works just like any other search engine, but the results are limited to Twitter content.

Short Code
A short code is the five-digit phone number used to send and receive Tweets via text message.

Stories
Stories on Twitter are found in the Discover tab. Think of Stories as expanded Trends. Stories are the Trends plus the links to the video, images, blogs, and web content mentioned in the Tweet.

Timeline
Your Timeline is a real time list of Tweets from users you?re following on Twitter.

Timestamp
Every Tweet is time stamped, which can be found in gray text directly below any Tweet. The timestamp is also a link to that Tweet?s own URL.

Top Tweets
Top Tweets are determined by a Twitter algorithm to be the most popular or resonant on Twitter at any given time. They are usually Tweets by people with the most followers or by people who Tweet often.

Trends
With over 150 million Twitter users Tweeting over 500 million Tweets a day, some topics become more popular than others. When a major earthquake hits Japan or a terrorist bomb explodes in the Middle East, thousands if not millions of people start Tweeting about the event. Usually they will add a hashtag to their Tweets so people can easily follow that topic. The Trends list on Twitter is a real-time summary of the most popular topics being Tweeted about at that moment.

Related:?The 5 Biggest Twitter Marketing Fails of 2012

A Tweet refers to a single Twitter post or text message. Your Twitter homepage consists of your timeline, which is a history of all your Tweets and the Tweets of all the people you?re following.

Tweeter
An account holder on Twitter who posts and reads Tweets is a Tweeter; also known as a Twitterer.

Tweetup
An in-person networking event that's promoted almost exclusively via Twitter is called a Tweetup. Tweetups have become very popular because you can quickly bring together a group of like-minded people who are following each other on Twitter. When you publicize the Tweetup on Twitter, the general public sees the invitation so you can attract new people to your networking groups with little effort.

Unfollow
When you want to stop following another Twitter user, you unfollow them. Their Tweets no longer show up in your home timeline.

URL Shortener
URL shorteners are used to turn long URLs into shorter URLs. Shortening your URLs is important because you only have 140 characters available for your Tweets. Some URL shorteners include www.bit.ly, www/TinyURL.com, and www.Ow.ly.

Username
Your username is also known as your Twitter handle. Your username must be unique and contain fewer than 15 characters. It is also used to identify you on Twitter for replies and mentions.

Verification
A process whereby a user?s Twitter account is stamped to show that a legitimate source is authoring the account?s Tweets is a verification. It is sometimes used for accounts that have experienced identity confusion or to verify a celebrity?s real identity for their Twitter account.

Who to Follow
You?ll find Who to Follow in the Discover tab. You'll see a few recommendations of accounts the Twitter algorithm thinks you?ll find interesting. The recommendations are based on the types of accounts you?re already following and who those people follow.

Widget
A widget is a bit of code that can be placed anywhere on the web. Widgets are very common in content management websites like WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. A widget placed on your website or blog can automatically display your Twitter updates in real time.

Skill position stars use combine as proving ground

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Matt Barkley and Landry Jones made some tough calls last season.

Instead of taking first-round money and leaving school early, they decided to stick around, hone their skills, chase a national championship and improve their draft stock.

With the NFL draft about two months away, the two quarterbacks once billed as Heisman Trophy front-runners are now trying to improve to enhance their chances of being selected early.

"I've learned a lot in this past year that you can't teach in a classroom," Barkley said Friday at the NFL scouting combine. "You have to learn through experience in regards to handling adversity at its peak. You have to get guys going in the locker room, in the huddle, on the practice field when you're not playing for the postseason. It allowed me to step up and be that voice."

It's unclear whether that will help Barkley in a year where there is no clear-cut top choice, even among the quarterbacks.

Scouts saw Barkley and Southern California's shot at a national championship ? and his chance for the Heisman ? come crashing down in a season that went terribly wrong. Becoming the first quarterback taken in the draft took a hit when he sprained his right shoulder in a late-season loss to crosstown rival UCLA. Barkley never took another college snap, and though he acknowledged Friday the rehab program is on track, critics are already wondering why he won't throw until his March 27 pro day.

Barkley also may find himself answering questions about a locker room dust-up that followed the Trojans' Sun Bowl loss to Georgia Tech.

"It was a normal football locker room environment. That happens all the time, trust me. It happens all the time on teams across the country," Barkley said. "It was nothing out of hand. It was guys exchanging words and wanting to set the record straight. But the captains, myself and some of the other seniors, we had everything under control."

The concerns about Jones have nothing do with health.

In 2012, he actually threw for more touchdowns, a higher completion percentage and had fewer interceptions and a better efficiency rating than in the previous season. But the perception after Oklahoma fell out of the title chase was that Jones failed to improve his poise in the pocket or his footwork. His performance at the Senior Bowl (3 of 9 for 16 yards with two sacks) raised more red flags.

Jones believes the extra year in college has made him better.

"I think I showed the things that I wanted to improve on," he said after measuring in at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds in Indy. "I shortened my motion and move around in the pocket a lot more than I have been."

There are so many concerns about this year's class of skill players, some analysts believe the unthinkable could happen: an entire first round without a quarterback or running back selected.

Right now, the top-rated quarterback is believed to be West Virginia's Geno Smith, like Jones and Barkley a drop-back passer, Others expect North Carolina State's strong-armed Mike Glennon to be a fast riser as the draft nears.

The quarterbacks aren't alone.

At running back, the list of potential first-round options essentially ended when South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore shredded his right knee in a gruesome scene Oct. 27. His pitch is that he will be the same spectacular runner when he returns, like two other NFL superstars who came back from devastating knee injuries.

"There will never be another Adrian Peterson, but that gives me a lot of motivation knowing that he came back from it. That's what I plan on doing, just coming back better," Lattimore said. "I feel like we both run hard. (Peterson) runs like nobody is there. He runs with total destruction.

"I feel like if I could compare my game to anybody, it would be Frank Gore. I feel like he's got low pads, he's got great vision, he can see the field and (has) great balance."

If Lattimore isn't the guy, the next best hope might be record-setting runner Montee Ball of Wisconsin. Critics complain he does not have enough speed to be a breakaway threat or enough size to be a power back.

There's also Alabama running back Eddie Lacy, the SEC championship game MVP, who must show he can stay healthy after a college career that included toe, knee, ankle and foot injuries.

Those guys will at least have a chance to prove themselves on the field at the combine and pro days between now and late April.

Receiver Da'Rick Rogers has the much tougher sell.

Yes, he's talented, but the receiver was booted off the Tennessee roster in late August after failing a drug test, transferred to Tennessee Tech and came out of school a year early.

"Those are things that I've been working on since I've left Tennessee. It was a real humbling experience for me," Rogers said. "I feel like it did help me in the long run. It's sad that it happened like that. For me, personally, it made me change who I was and what I was doing wrong."

All that's left is for the NFL's decision-makers to render their judgments on the biggest questions of all:

? Has Rogers really made that big a change in six months?

? Can Lattimore be the player he once was?

? And are Barkley and Jones worth high draft picks?

"Every year is not going to be the same," Barkley said in making his case. "You can't get better every single year. It's physically impossible to keep throwing for more yards, more yards, more yards every year. There's going to be some years where it just doesn't click or things don't go as planned."

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius walked out of a South African court Friday a free man ? for now ? after a magistrate agreed to release him on bail ahead of his premeditated murder trial over the shooting death of his girlfriend.

But even as he was driven away from court and chased by videographers and photographers, questions continued to hound the Paralympian about what actually happened when he opened fire on Valentine's Day inside his home and killed Reeva Steenkamp.

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair, who agreed to bail with harsh restrictions for the athlete, expressed his own doubts about Pistorius' story. Those questions, highlighted at a four-day bail hearing that at times foreshadowed his coming trial, come from Pistorius' account that he felt threatened and mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired the four shots at her in his bathroom.

"Why would (Pistorius) venture further into danger?" Nair asked.

Pistorius' supporters shouted "Yes!" when Nair made his decision after a nearly two hour explanation of his ruling to a packed courtroom in Pretoria, South Africa's capital. Yet when prosecutors and the defense said they agreed to bail terms, Nair more than doubled those conditions for the 26-year-old runner to be free ahead of trial.

Nair set the bail at 1 million rand ($113,000), with $11,300 in cash up front and proof that the rest is available. The magistrate said Pistorius must hand over his passports and also turn in any other guns that he owns. Pistorius also cannot leave the district of Pretoria without the permission of his probation officer, Nair said, nor can he take drugs or drink alcohol.

Pistorius' family members hugged each other after the decision was read, with tears in their eyes.

"We are relieved at the fact that Oscar got bail today but at the same time we are in mourning for the death of Reeva with her family," said Pistorius' uncle, Arnold Pistorius. "As a family, we know Oscar's version of what happened on that tragic night and we know that that is the truth and that will prevail in the coming court case."

Sharon Steenkamp, Reeva's cousin, had said earlier that the family wouldn't be watching the bail decision and hadn't been following the hearing in Pretoria.

"It doesn't make any difference to the fact that we are without Reeva," she told The Associated Press.

Nair set Pistorius' next court appearance for June 4. The Olympian left the courthouse in a silver Land Rover, sitting in the rear, just more than an hour after the magistrate imposed the bail conditions. The vehicle, tailed by motorcycles carrying television cameramen aboard, later pulled into the home of Pistorius' uncle.

Pistorius left behind more than a dozen international and local television crews at the red-brick courthouse. It's a sign of the growing global fascination with a case involving an inspirational athlete and his beautiful, law-school graduate girlfriend, who was a model and reality TV show contestant.

During Friday's long session in Pretoria Magistrate's Court, Pistorius alternately wept and appeared solemn and more composed, especially toward the end as Nair criticized police procedures in the case and as a judgment in Pistorius' favor appeared imminent. He showed no reaction as he was granted bail.

Before the hearing, Pistorius' longtime coach Ampie Louw said he hoped to put his runner back into his morning and afternoon training routine if he got bail.

"The sooner he can start working the better," said Louw, who was the person who convinced the double-amputee to take up track as a teenager a decade ago. But he acknowledged Pistorius could be "heartbroken" and unwilling to immediately pull on his carbon-fiber running blades, the reason behind his "Blade Runner" nickname.

There is one place, however, where Nair ordered that Pistorius cannot go: His upscale home in a gated community in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria, where he killed Steenkamp in the predawn hours of Feb. 14.

Pistorius said in a sworn statement to the court that he shot his girlfriend accidentally, believing she was an intruder in his house. He described "a sense of terror rushing over" him and feeling vulnerable because he stood only on his stumps before opening fire.

Prosecutors, however, say he intended to kill Steenkamp, saying the shooting followed a loud argument between the two. Yet despite poking holes in Pistorius' statement ? they questioned why he didn't notice his girlfriend missing despite walking past the bed and brought up incidents that they said highlighted his temper ? their case unraveled through testimony by the police's lead investigator in the case, Detective Warrant Officer Hilton Botha.

Botha, who faces seven charges of attempted murder in an unrelated incident, was removed from the case Thursday. His replacement, the nation's top detective Vinesh Moonoo, stopped briefly by the hearing Friday. Prosecution spokesman Medupe Simasiku said later Friday: "We're still confident in our case."

While Nair leveled harsh criticism at Botha for "errors" and "blunders," he said one man does not represent an investigation and that the state could not be expected to put all "the pieces of the puzzle" together in such a short time. The magistrate questioned whether Pistorius would be a flight risk and be prepared to go "ducking and diving" around the world when he stood to lose a fortune in cash, cars, property and other assets.

Pistorius faced the sternest bail requirements in South Africa because of the seriousness of the charge. His defense lawyers had to prove that he would not flee the country, would not interfere with witnesses or the case and his release would not cause public unrest. They also had to show "exceptional" circumstances for his release as well, something Nair said could be found in the "weak" case offered by prosecutors.

Yet the magistrate still anticipated the shape of the state's case at trial. Nair said he had serious questions about Pistorius' account: Why didn't he try to locate his girlfriend on fearing an intruder was in the house? Why didn't he try to determine who was in the bathroom? And why would he venture into perceived "danger" ? the bathroom area ? when he could have taken other steps to ensure his safety?

Touching those unanswered questions, Nair said: "There are improbabilities which need to be explored."

France ready to start Mali withdrawal despite Gao attack: admiral

OTTAWA (Reuters) - France is still ready to start pulling its forces out of Mali next month despite a rebel attack on the key town of Gao, the French commander of the defense staff said on Friday.

Admiral Edouard Guillaud told reporters after a speech in Ottawa that he was not surprised by Thursday's attack in Gao, when 15 Islamists were killed by French and Malian troops.

Asked whether France still planned to start withdrawing troops in March, he replied: "This is obviously conditions-based, that's obvious. But yet, I don't see any reason not to begin some drawdown."

How to Cook the Whole Darn Pig

? A pig roast is like a big party where you get to be part Boy Scout, part caveman. You can't do it by yourself, and that's the beauty of it. You're sitting in lawn chairs, telling stories, and tending a huge fire all night long. It's the opposite of fast food. Nothing makes me happier.

? I've cooked a lot of pigs?hundreds of them, I'd guess. A lot of that pig has been served at my restaurants, McCrady's and Husk, but just as much is the product of roasting with friends.

? If you roast a large pig, like 200 pounds dressed, it can take 24 hours. Through the night you can't go to sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time. You are basically camping, which would include necessities such as cold beer, music, and snacks.

? Come daylight you still have a lot of time to kill. The party continues. We go four-wheeling, shotgun beers, play football, toss horseshoes. Shooting guns is also a fun way to pass the time, but I wouldn't suggest that in your backyard?or anywhere?if you've got a belly full of beer.

? I didn't eat pork until I was, like, 15. That was on account of a strange religious thing having to do with the non-denominational church my family went to. I didn't ever have pepperoni pizza; I never had bacon. Maybe that's why I'm so obsessed with pigs now.

? Just about every chef loves pork. But the real turning point for me was when I started raising pigs myself. Completely changed my perspective. These pigs loved me?they were like pets. So the first time I took one to the abattoir I was nervous, but then this enormous amount of respect for the animals hit me like a ton of bricks. Now nothing from the pig goes in the garbage, absolutely nothing except for the bones?and we don't throw them away until after we make stock from them. Everything else finds its way to the plate.

? The expression "eating high on the hog" has never made any sense to me. It's a vestige of history. The rich people got the pieces from high on the hog, like the loin and the chops. The poor ate what's low, like the feet and the hocks. In my opinion, there isn't one piece of the pig that isn't perfect and delicious.

? My ideal for whole-hog cookery is a 240-pound Farmers Cross, specifically, a Berkshire or Tamworth Cross. Both of those have the genes of different breeds, which gives you a balanced animal?good meat-to-fat ratio in the belly, the hams aren't too big, the loin has the right amount of fat cap on it, and the shoulders are large and well-marbled.

3 Ways to Roast a Whole Pig

[1] Spit:
"You keep turning it to get an even, golden-brown crust," Brock says. "It's a bit faster, but it's open-air, so you lose some of the smoky flavor." PopMech pick: the stainless-steel Lexuss2012, $550 [2] Concrete-block Pit:
"I prefer this method," he says. "It gives you the control to cook the pig slowly, moving the coals around until it's tender." See here. [3] La Caja China Roaster:
"You put the pig in the box with charcoal on top," Brock says. "It makes for moist meat, and it's almost foolproof, but it doesn't give the wood flavor that I'm obsessed with." From $260; La Caja China.

? The secret to tender, succulent meat throughout the entire animal is slow, slow cooking. I can cook a lamb on a spit in 5 hours. I prefer five times as long as that for a pig of the usual size I roast.

? I start with a rub that has sugar, smoked paprika, and top-secret spices. This gives you the "bark" once the rub caramelizes during roasting. It's one of my favorite parts to eat.

? Some people inject their pigs before roasting with seasoned liquids or fruit juices. I've never done this and never will. Injecting manipulates the flavor deep in the meat, unlike a rub, which is superficial. In my opinion, you roast a pig to taste it in its purest form.

? There are many ways to roast a pig. Each has its good points, depending on your level of experience, the pig size, the flavor you want to achieve. I prefer a concrete-block pit. You can build it to the size that suits the pig and control the heat to ensure even cooking by adding embers or moving them around. After the feast you can break it down and store it until the next roast.

? As for the heat source, I'm a purist?I prefer embers. Use a well-seasoned, local wood. We use mostly oak in the Low Country. I'll throw in some hickory or pecan for flavor. I make the embers by burning the wood down in a steel barrel. The flavor achieved by using only embers is amazing?subtle and smoky.

? Live music is perfect for the party, good music is a must. My pig-roast playlist is strictly Southern. Drive-By Truckers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard?they all set the right mood.

? Your experiences at a pig roast are universal. That's what I love about it. When that pig hits the table, nothing else matters. Everyone lets down their guard and digs in. I encourage eating with your hands. It's such a primal thing. It reminds us that we are human.

5 Steps to Roast a Hog

[1] Pick Your Pig
One with too little fat will be dry when cooked; too much fat and it will be greasy. Also, know your source: How a pig is raised and fed determines flavor.

[2] Pick Your Wood
No briquettes. Make embers from a local hardwood that's well-seasoned so it burns down properly before going into the pit.

[3] Take Your Time
Cook slowly over heat from 200 F to 250 F. Move the embers around for even cooking.

[4] Crisp the Skin
Near the end, get the skin closer to the coals to crisp it. Work fast?overcooking is a real risk. Pull on the ribs; if they part from the meat, it's tender and ready to eat.

[5] Sauce the Hog
Brush on BBQ sauce. Once it bubbles, remove pig from pit, carve, serve.
