Crude output at Pan American's Cerro Dragon field in Chubut province has fallen about 75,000 barrels a day to around 19,000 barrels since Thursday, when 300 to 400 protesters took over production facilities at the field.
Natural gas production has fallen 3 million cubic meters a day, the company said, without offering more details.
"If the facilities are still occupied, we expect to see the total paralysis of oil and gas output in a maximum of 30 hours," the company said. "This could cause grave consequences for the domestic hydrocarbons supply and jeopardize gas distribution to localities served by the Patagonian pipeline."
Cerro Dragon normally injects about 6.5 million cubic meters of gas into Argentina's national gas pipeline system. The field ships gas to the city of Buenos Aires and smaller towns in southern Argentina.
"It's hard to get production back online quickly," Pan American Chief Executive Oscar Prieto said in a television interview late Friday.
Pan American said the protesters, who belong to a construction workers' union known as "The Dragons," stormed the area early Thursday and destroyed trucks, fiber-optic equipment and critically important monitoring equipment.
Prieto said the protest was totally unexpected.
The workers, who are demanding higher wages and legal recognition, took over a power generator, putting all of the company's oil and natural gas production in the area at risk, according to Pan American.
The protesters aren't Pan American employees but work as contractors for companies hired by Pan American.
Guido Dickanson, who leads the workers, said in a television interview the workers want to be treated and paid as if they were official oil union workers.
"We're all oil workers. It doesn't matter that we're not technically in the oil workers' union," he said.
Unionized oil workers are among the highest paid workers in Argentina.
"They have the highest salaries in the country," Prieto said, though he declined provide specific numbers.
The protesters have prevented around 6,700 workers from doing their jobs at the field, Pan American said.
The Cerro Dragon field is more than 50 years old, but it's still the most productive and important in Argentina, Prieto said.
Pan American has invested around $3.5 billion in the field over the past four years. Cerro Dragon is also one of the biggest fields of its kind in Argentina and is more than 15 times bigger than the city of Buenos Aires.
Because of the conflict, Pan American doesn't have any employees at Cerro Dragon and it is unclear when workers will be able to return.
BP PLC (BP) owns a 60% stake in Pan American. The remaining 40% is equally split between Argentina's Bridas Energy Holdings Ltd. and China's Cnooc Ltd. (CEO).

The probe includes about 87,000 of the cars from the 2011 model year that have 3.6-liter V-6 engines.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received 15 complaints that the engines stall without warning while coasting to a stop.
The probe could lead to a recall. The safety agency says it's looking into how often the problem happens.
Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne says the company is working with the government. He says engine performance can be affected by many things like software and fuel quality. Mayne says the 3.6-liter engine is in 12 Chrysler models and has traveled millions of miles without problems.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press ahead of the announcement, Chehade, 50, said his work at RosettaNet prepared him for the new role.
"The thrill and the satisfaction of bringing people around some common understanding is tremendous," Chehade said. "I have a personal and deep love of bringing consensus."
He said that when executive recruiters contacted him about the position at ICANN, "I immediately had flashbacks of how much I enjoyed doing a job that everybody told me was impossible and difficult."
As CEO, Chehade will receive a base salary of $560,000 plus up to $240,000 in bonuses based on merit. He is tentatively set to start Oct. 1. His tenure lasts until July 1, 2015.
Beckstrom leaves ICANN this July 1. Chief Operating Officer Akram Atallah will serve as CEO in the interim.
One of Chehade's chief tasks will be guiding the largest expansion of the Internet address system since its creation in the 1980s. The change affects how people find Web sites or send email and could lead to more options for businesses as easy-to-remember ".com" names are harder to obtain.
ICANN has received 1,930 proposals for 1,409 different domain name suffixes, including ".love," ''.google" and ".music." They would rival ".com" and others now in use. A florist called Apple can't use "apple.com" today because the computer company has it, but the shop might get "apple.flowers" one day.
Even after a decade of debate, however, the expansion still faces criticism, much of it from trademark holders who worry about having to police the Internet for addresses that misuse their brands.
"Anything new like this is going to create angst and controversy, and it's going to create opportunity," Chehade said.
ICANN is also in charge of assigning the numeric Internet Protocol addresses used to identify computers, smartphones and other Internet-connected devices. And it faces perennial calls for the United Nations to take a greater role in crafting Internet policies. Although ICANN has board members from around the world, it is headquartered in Los Angeles and gets its authority from the U.S. government, which funded much of the Internet's early development.
Chehade has some international experience, having served for a year in Dubai as IBM general manager for global technology services for the Middle East and North Africa. Born in Lebanon and of Egyptian decent, he speaks English, Arabic, French and Italian. He lives in Los Angeles and became a U.S. citizen in 1986.
Chehade moved to the U.S. in 1980 at age 18. Smuggled out of Beirut, he arrived in Los Angeles with $482 and worked two restaurant jobs there before attending Polytechnic Institute of New York on a scholarship. After graduating with a computer science degree in 1985, he got a master's in engineering management from Stanford University a year later.
He worked at Bell Labs before starting a company, Nett Information Products, in the early 1990s. The company offered services that used Lotus Notes software to let companies collaborate with partners over proprietary networks. Ingram Micro Inc., a distributor of information-technology products, bought the company in 1996 and tasked Chehade with adapting the services to run over the Internet.
It was there that he built software for computers from various companies to talk to one another with little human intervention. For instance, when CompUSA places an order through 3Com Corp.'s website, 3Com's computers automatically contact Ingram Micro's machines to ship the products to CompUSA.
That system was custom built. Its success prompted Chehade to create standards ? such as common ways for proprietary systems to define shopping baskets ? so that it could be used by hundreds or thousands of businesses.
That effort evolved into RosettaNet, which brought together leading, sometimes-competing companies such as Microsoft Corp., SAP AG, Oracle Corp., IBM Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc., along with FedEx and UPS.
"I had to get all these Silicon Valley giants in a room and convince them that if their machines talk to each other, we don't lose a competitive advantage," Chehade said.
After leaving RosettaNet in 2000, Chehade created Viacore Inc., which offered supply-chain management services to businesses that didn't want to build their own systems in-house. IBM bought the company in 2006 and hired Chehade. He left IBM in 2009, after spending a year in Dubai. After a brief stint as CEO of CoreObjects Software Inc., Chehade became head of Vocado LLC, which makes software for educational institutions.
Atallah, the No. 2 executive at ICANN, was Chehade's deputy at CoreObjects. They had also known each other as children; both served in the boy scouts in Lebanon.
Chehade credited the Internet with helping him stay in touch with childhood friends, many of whom scattered around the world because of a lengthy civil war in Lebanon during the late 70s and 80s. He said his "personal and professional passion about the value of the Internet" will lead him to favor policies that keep the Internet free from unnecessary restrictions.
At a news conference in Prague announcing his appointment, Chehade added, "I'm here because I owe the Internet everything that I've achieved today."

The dating of one of the thousands of images in the Northern Territory rock shelter known as Nawarla Gabarnmang will be published in the next edition of the Journal of Archaeological Science.
University of Southern Queensland archaeologist Bryce Barker said Monday that he found the rock in June last year but only recently had it dated at New Zealand's University of Waikato radiocarbon laboratory.
He said the rock art was made with charcoal, so radiocarbon dating could be used to determine its age. Most rock art is made with mineral paint, so its age cannot be accurately measured.
"It's the oldest unequivocally dated rock art in Australia" and among the oldest in the world, Barker said.
The oldest known rock art is in Spain, where hand stencils and red disks made by blowing paint on to the wall in El Castillo cave are at least 40,800 years old, according to scientists using a technique known as uranium-thorium dating.
Australian National University archaeologist Sally May, who is not involved with Barker's research, described his find as "incredibly significant."
"I don't think it will surprise anyone that rock art is that old in Australia because we know people have been here a lot longer than that and there's no reason to believe they weren't producing art," she added.
Barker said he found evidence that the cave where he found the rock art had been occupied for 45,000 years.

Luka Magnotta, the Canadian porn actor suspected of killing and dismembering another man, made his first appearance in a Montreal courthouse today. CBC's Peter Akman reports.

Luka Magnotta, a Canadian porn actor accused of killing and dismembering his 33-year-old Chinese lover in Montreal, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
Magnotta was arraigned a day after he arrived in Canada, touching down at Quebec?s Mirabel Airport aboard a military jet. He was extradited from Germany.
Magnotta appeared via teleconference at the Montreal courthouse Tuesday?afternoon, the CBC reported.
Magnotta, 29, was arrested at an Internet cafe in?Berlin on June 4 after a 10-day manhunt.
Magnotta, born Eric Newman, was a porn actor and escort who reportedly?has at least 70 Facebook pages, including some with violent language about killing lovers.
Canadian authorities allege that he filmed the murder and dismemberment of Lin Jun, a Concordia University student, in late May; posted the footage on a website dedicated to gore; and then mailed Lin?s hands and feet to political parties in Ottawa and schools in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Lin?s torso was found in a suitcase in the alley of Magnotta?s apartment building. His head has not been recovered.
Police believe that after mailing Lin?s body parts, Magnotta flew to Paris, where he partied for several days before heading to Germany. When authorities found him at the Internet caf? in Berlin, he was reading about himself, according to media reports.
