Fisker sues XL over hybrid cars wrecked by Superstorm Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fisker Automotive has sued XL Group Plc after being denied insurance coverage over flooding from Superstorm Sandy that destroyed 338 of its Karma plug-in hybrids, worth about $33 million, at a Port Newark, New Jersey, shipping facility.

In a complaint filed on Friday in the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan, Fisker said the vehicles had been submerged in more than 5 feet of seawater on October 29 while they were awaiting shipment to dealers across the country.

The Anaheim, California-based startup said it submitted a timely claim to XL Insurance America Inc, whose policy entitled it to a maximum $100 million of coverage for named storms such as Sandy, subject to a deductible and other provisions, only to have it denied on December 20.

David Klein, a partner at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe which represents Fisker, said in a phone interview that the dispute centered on whether the cars were in "transit," and which sublimits may apply, if any.

Fisker is seeking a court order that its policy covers the vehicle loss, as well as damages for breach of contract and other remedies.

An XL spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The company is based in Dublin, Ireland, but has a U.S. office in Stamford, Connecticut.

More than 10,000 vehicles were estimated to have been lost at the New Jersey facility, including several thousand from Toyota Motor Corp.

The denial of insurance coverage followed a series of quality-control and financial setbacks this year at privately held Fisker tied to the launch of the Karma.

Sandy is expected to become the second-costliest U.S. catastrophe in history, trailing only 2005's Hurricane Katrina, with insured loss estimates as high as $25 billion.

XL shares closed down 10 cents at $24.69 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

The case is Fisker Automotive Inc v. XL Insurance America Inc, New York State Supreme Court, New York county, No. 654571/2012. (Editing by Matthew Lewis)

Internal and External Hemorrhoids Treatments | Health & Fitness ...

Bloody stool, pain and itchiness are all symptoms a hemorrhoids patient is likely to experience. Hemorrhoids are simply a swollen anal canal tissue due to its swollen blood vessels. Let me give you a brief summery of hemorrhoid cure information that you will find very useful.

Irritation and itchiness can result in the surrounding tissues of a hemorrhoid that projects out of the anal canal.

Blood could result from injuring the area around an external hemorrhoid. This make it tough to clean the affected region, especially with the pain involved in the process.

Fresh blood is time and again the earliest sign of hemorrhoids. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. An internal hemorrhoid is what we name a hemorrhoid with no visible part extending outside the anal canal. However, an internal hemorrhoid can extend from the anus.

Pushing hard while passing stool can cause hemorrhoids. Other risk factors than can cause hemorrhoids if you expose yourself to includes irregular bowel movement. This can be caused by eating some sorts of food.

After the 12th week of pregnancy, an expecting mother is at risk of developing hemorrhoids. This is due that the fetes growth in its surroundings increasing the likelihood of external and internal hemorrhoids. Excessive pressure on the pelvic area can result in hemorrhoids despite the individual medical history.

Pregnant women can worsen the hemorrhoids during normal delivery because the experienced strain.

If you see blood or mucus on your stool, you might have hemorrhoid. Best results comes from the earlier consultations. Visit your doctor if in doubt.

Severe cases might require a minor surgery. However, your doctor might prescribe a drug to strengthen the blood vessels if the hemorrhoid is mild.

Prevention is considered the best route, you can forbid the recurrence of hemorrhoids. Some helpful tips to consider:

1.Eat more vegetable and fruits and increase fibres in your daily diet. Good sources of fibres includes: Whole grains, brown rice and pastas, and quinoa.

2. Prolonged sitting period is a risk factor for hemorrhoids. 90 minutes of weekly exercise can help in reducing the risk. Do not be lazy.

3. Try not to be overweight, it is proved that above average persons are more at risk of developing hemorrhoids than normal weighted person.

4. Google ?natural hemorrhoids cure? Or ?home cure for hemorrhoids? (quotes included) and read about it more.

Study Claims Online Voter Registration Contributed ?Significantly? To Higher Youth Registration

3003337804_c01d490152 (1)California's experiment in fully online voter registration appears to have been a success. "Online registration contributed significantly to an increase in 2012 youth registrants and modestly to overall increases in general registration rates," claims a University of California, Davis, study of the 2012 election, which finds that online voting boosted youth registration an entire percent (10.1 percent to 11.1 percent) in its short one-month existence prior to the election [PDF].

Measuring Search Engines Advertising Campaigns

Advertising Search Engines provides the best means of placing the PPC Advertising on the internet which will attract many eyeballs for sure. This opportunity of presenting consumers with the PPC advertisements tailored to meet their immediate buying interests encourages consumers to click on searchads instead of unpaid search results, which are often less relevant and appealing. By smart and innovative way of advertisement designs all the customers tend to click on the ads thus driving higher traffic and revenues to the publishers.

This PPC Advertising is sold and delivered on the basis of keywords by all the Advertising Search Engines. Keywords are the phrases or queries that the internet users search for on the search engines to get their desired information. The keywords that the PPC ad campaign uses can be more than a single word in length. The Advertising Search Engines conduct running auctions to sell ads according to the bids received for keywords and relative relevance of user keywords to ads in the account. However, some keywords are more expensive and some are offered at a very low price based on their demand for the internet users. Also, Profit potential of the keywords also takes into account for the bids made on ads that advertisers want to display when the keywords are searched by the user.

All these bidding and selling of PPC Advertising on the Advertising Search Engines is measured using five different parameters. The advertisers have to pay according to the type of paying options they choose to pay the publishers. Let???s see here at all the five of them.

Cost Per Click (CPC):
CPC or Cost Per Click is an Internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, where advertisers pay the publisher when the particular ad is clicked. Advertising Search Engines offers advertisers to typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. However, content sites generally charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. In traditional marketing, CPC was viewed as a one way process of reaching target audiences through means such as direct mail, radio ads and television ads whereas of now two way contacts are possible through web based chat, Internet based calls, call back requests or mailing list sign ups and more.

Cost Per Action (CPA):

CPA or Cost Per Action is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action linked to the advertisement. The CPA can be determined by different factors, depending where the online advertising inventory is being purchased. Affiliate networks operate on a CPA basis. CPA systems function most effectively when sales cycles are short and easily tracked. Longer sales cycles and sales requiring multiple customer contacts can be difficult to track, leading to reluctance by publishers to participate in CPA programs beyond initial lead generation.

Cost Per Mille (CPM):

Cost Per Mille or CPM also called as Cost Per Thousand is a commonly used measurement in advertising like TV, Radio and Online advertising. CPM remains the most common method for pricing banner ads.

Click Through Rate (CTR):

CTR or Click Through Rate is a way of measuring the success of an online advertising campaign for a particular website as well as the effectiveness of an email campaign. It measures the number of times an ad is clicked as a percentage of views of the Web page on which the ad appears.

Total Minutes (TM):

Total Minutes or TM is a metric used by net ratings to measure the total time spent on a Web page rather than the number of Web page views.

Certainly, PPC Advertising campaigns can produce immediate results by driving maximum traffic in less time and thus adding up to the revenues.

Pebble smartwatch stops by FCC, tries to prove it's not vaporware

The Pebble smartwatch missed its original September target ship date. Then, it failed to ship in time to stuff stockings this holiday season. And, while we've seen them in person and the company claims a release is imminent, you'd be forgiven for being a bit skeptical. But there is reason to hope: the connected wristwear has officially received a thumbs up from the FCC. What's more, the e-paper timepiece gets the full teardown treatment and comes complete with an owners manual. There's no surprises here, but if you're the impatient type, there should be a few things to keep you occupied until the next delay.

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

5 Love Lessons From Holiday Movies | YourTango

couple on couch watching holiday movie
What's your favorite holiday movie?

From Rudolph to The Nightmare Before Christmas, these movies are filled with love.

Cuddled up on the couch today watching holiday movies? Here's what you can learn about love from some of our favorite Christmas flicks.

More from YourTango: 7 Things We Learned About Dating In 2012

1. The most unexpected people might be the ones who pull through for you
Sure, Rudolph may have been about a reindeer and a sticky situation for Santa, but that doesn?t mean you can?t take a love lesson from it. Everyone thought Rudolph was a lost cause and no one wanted to give him a chance. However, the moment he was truly needed, he became a knight in shining (or glowing) armor and saved the day. Basically, don?t write someone off simply because they?re a little strange or different than anyone else you?ve dated ??he may wind up being the most steadfast rock in your life.

2. People can be redeemed with support
A Christmas Carol holds one of the most important lessons in both life and the holiday season: people do change, sometimes. While Scrooge seemed to be a truly miserable human being, when his negative actions and demeanor were shown to him? rather than simply being yelled ? he was able to evolve into a better human being. When it comes to serious relationship problems, you should attempt to explain to your partner the problems you have with him. Let him know that you want things to work out for the two of you. If he takes the necessary steps to grow and change for the better with your support, your relationship can be rescued.

3. Don?t take your current situation for granted (but do explore your options)
In The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington is bored with his very prestigious role in Halloween Town, even with his devoted love interest Sally. When he falls down a rabbit hole of sorts and winds up exploring an entirely new land, he finds himself enthralled in a 'grass is greener' situation (though in this case, the snow is whiter). Eventually, after nearly destroying his relationships with everyone around him, he recognizes the importance of being happy with what you have. Don?t simply covet change because it?s 'new'. If you have somebody you love who loves you, try to work with what you have and create excitement that way. Keep reading ...

Storms, tornado threats for Christmas around US

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Nasty weather is already complicating travel in parts of the U.S., with forecasts of snow, thunderstorms and more threatening a sloppy Christmas Day from Texas to Florida.

In Oklahoma, authorities were already warning would-be travelers to stay home Tuesday as freezing rain and sleet caused a 21-vehicle pileup on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City.

Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph says several people were taken to hospitals, but she didn't have details on their injuries or conditions.

Along the Gulf Coast, residents braced for the possibility of tornadoes and powerful thunderstorms. Quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in western Louisiana, and the weather service said a tornado watch was in effect over parts of southeast and south-central Louisiana until the afternoon.

Sacha Baron Cohen 'failed' first 'Les Mis' audition

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Singing is a perfect way to ring in Christmas Day, but who knew it would be coming from TODAY's Matt Lauer and "Les Miserables" star Sacha Baron Cohen?

Baron Cohen spoke with Lauer on Tuesday, but not before the actor began crooning, "I am contractually obligated to do this whole interview in song." Baron Cohen plays?corrupt innkeeper Monsieur Thenardier in the film, and like all of the actors, sings all of his lines in the movie.

He noted (after returning to his usual spoken voice) that "Les Miserables" is "a staple in London," and when he was 20, he gave a stab at being in the chorus. "I passed the singing bit," he noted, but fell down when it came to the dancing part. Not that he didn't give it a good try: "There's like 200 people standing outside in the rain (at the audition), and then it came to the dancing bit ... and you had to learn a routine and it was clear I had absolutely no idea how to do it," said Baron Cohen. "So when it came time for action ... I decided to freestyle."?

He did not get the job. "I failed," he added.

Not so in "Les Miserables," where there's a lot of singing (and minimal dancing). By the end of the interview, Baron Cohen was back to singing -- and so was Lauer. Check out the video for the rest!

"Les Miserables" opened in theaters on Dec. 25.

8 dead after Christmas Day fires in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Authorities in the Philippines say at least eight people are dead after two separate Christmas Day fires in the capital region. One of the blazes left about 1,500 people homeless when it razed their shantytown.

Arson investigator Rosendo Cabillan says a predawn fire Tuesday razed two apartment buildings in Quezon City, a Manila suburb. A veterinarian and six household members died after they were trapped inside.

Fire officer Noel Binwag says another blaze in suburban San Juan city hours earlier destroyed shanties of about 1,500 people.

Binwag says angry residents beat a man to death after accusing him of starting the fire.

He says two firemen also were injured when they were hit by rocks by some residents who grabbed their fire hoses to put out the blaze themselves.

UN helicopter shot down in South Sudan; 4 dead

(AP) ? South Sudan's armed forces shot down a U.N. helicopter on Friday and all four crew on board died, the United Nations said.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the helicopter from the U.N. mission in South Sudan was on a reconnaissance mission when it was shot down.

"In subsequent communications between the mission and the South Sudanese Armed Forces, the SPLA told the mission that it has shot down the helicopter in the Likuangole area in Jonglei state," he said. The SPLA is South Sudan's army.

Del Buey added, "initial reports indicate that the U.N. helicopter crashed and burned."

The U.N. mission immediately launched a search mission, and "it has confirmed the death of all four crew members," he said.

The mission is investigating, del Buey said.

Earlier, the mission had said the Russian-built Mi-8 helicopter was not carrying any passengers.

Boehner abandons fiscal cliff plan as Republicans balk

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican lawmakers delivered a stinging rebuke to their leader, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, on Thursday when they failed to back an effort designed to extract concessions from President Barack Obama in year-end "fiscal cliff" talks.

The dramatic twist threw into disarray attempts to head off $600 billion worth of indiscriminate tax hikes and spending cuts that could push the U.S. economy into recession next year.

It also cast doubt over Boehner's future as speaker after failing to control unruly conservatives in his caucus.

With only 11 days left for bickering politicians to prevent automatic tax hikes and spending cuts, U.S. stock futures fell sharply on the news of the rebuke to Boehner.

The Ohio congressman had hoped to demonstrate Republican unity by passing a bill through the House, known as "Plan B," that would limit income-tax increases to the wealthiest sliver of the population - those earning $1 million and more, a far smaller slice of taxpayers than Obama wants to pay higher taxes.

But Boehner canceled the vote after failing to round up enough support from his party because many conservative Republicans are opposed to tax hikes on even the richest wage-earning Americans.

"The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass," Boehner said in a statement after huddling with other Republican leaders.

The White House pledged to work with Congress to reach a deal as quickly as possible.

"We are hopeful that we will be able to find a bipartisan solution quickly that protects the middle class and our economy," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

The bill, had it passed, would have put Republicans on record as supporting a tax increase on those who earn more than $1 million per year, breaking with decades of orthodoxy. It won the blessing of influential anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, but other conservative groups fiercely opposed it and many rank-and-file members said they would not support it.

Obama wants to raise taxes on families earning more than $400,000, a much lower threshold.

RECESSION THREAT

Obama and Boehner aim to reach a deal before the New Year, when taxes will automatically rise for nearly all Americans and the government will have to scale back spending on domestic and military programs. Economists say the combined $600 billion hit to the economy could push the U.S. economy into recession.

Boehner said Obama now must first pass a bill through the Democratic-controlled Senate before he holds another vote in the House.

Democrats said Boehner should first hammer out a deal with Obama. "The only way to avoid the cliff altogether is for Speaker Boehner to return to negotiations," said Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid.

With Republicans in chaos, Boehner will almost certainly need support from House Democrats to pass a deal before the end of the year. But he will have to keep an eye on his right flank before he stands for re-election as the top House lawmaker on January 3.

Alternatively, Boehner could wait until the new year to hold a vote. At that point, tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003 will have expired for all Americans, and it presumably would be easier to pass a bill that would restore tax cuts for most.

Opinion polls show that more Americans would blame Republicans rather than Obama if they don't reach a deal before then.

So far, negotiations appear to be following the dysfunctional pattern set by the 2011 battle over the debt ceiling: fitful progress alternating with public posturing. Boehner also struggled during that showdown to corral the most conservative members of his own party.

Washington narrowly avoided defaulting on the U.S. government's debt in August 2011, but the down-to-the-wire nature of the effort prompted a first-ever debt rating downgrade and spooked investors and consumers.

This time around, concern over the fiscal cliff has weighed on markets but analysts say that investors appear to be assuming that the two sides will avert disaster.

"The markets are likely to interpret this as signaling even tougher negotiations in coming days," Mohamed El-Erian, chief executive of bond giant PIMCO, told Reuters.

S&P 500 stock futures fell 1.6 percent while Dow Jones stock futures and Nasdaq futures both lost 1.5 percent. At one point S&P 500 e-mini futures were down as much as 3.6 percent.

Lawmakers had hoped to wrap up work before the year-end Christmas break, but leaders in both the House and the Senate have indicated that they may call members back to work next week.

"The brinkmanship will continue," said a senior Republican aide. "This isn't the end of the story. More drama to come."

'Missing' polar weather systems could impact climate predictions

Dec. 16, 2012 ? Intense but small-scale polar storms could make a big difference to climate predictions according to new research from the University of East Anglia and the University of Massachusetts.

Difficult-to-forecast polar mesoscale storms occur frequently over the polar seas, however they are missing in most climate models.

Research published December 16 in Nature Geoscience shows that their inclusion could paint a different picture of climate change in years to come.

Polar mesoscale storms are capable of producing hurricane-strength winds which cool the ocean and lead to changes in its circulation.

Prof Ian Renfrew, from UEA's School of Environmental Sciences, said: "These polar lows are typically under 500 km in diameter and over within 24-36 hours. They're difficult to predict, but we have shown they play an important role in driving large-scale ocean circulation.

"There are hundreds of them a year in the North Atlantic, and dozens of strong ones. They create a lot of stormy weather, strong winds and snowfall -- particularly over Norway, Iceland, and Canada, and occasionally over Britain, such as in 2003 when a massive dump of snow brought the M11 to a standstill for 24 hours.

"We have shown that adding polar storms into computer-generated models of the ocean results in significant changes in ocean circulation -- including an increase in heat travelling north in the Atlantic Ocean and more overturning in the Sub-polar seas.

"At present, climate models don't have a high enough resolution to account for these small-scale polar lows.

"As Arctic Sea ice continues to retreat, polar lows are likely to migrate further north, which could have consequences for the 'thermohaline' or northward ocean circulation -- potentially leading to it weakening."

Alan Condron from the University of Massachusetts said: "By simulating polar lows, we find that the area of the ocean that becomes denser and sinks each year increases and causes the amount of heat being transported towards Europe to intensify.

"The fact that climate models are not simulating these storms is a real problem because these models will incorrectly predict how much heat is being moved northward towards the poles. This will make it very difficult to reliably predict how the climate of Europe and North America will change in the near-future."

Prof Renfrew added: "Climate models are always improving, and there is a trade-off between the resolution of the model, the complexity of the model, and the number of simulations you can carry out. Our work suggests we should put some more effort into resolving such storms."

'The impact of polar mesoscale storms on Northeast Atlantic ocean circulation' by Alan Condron from the University of Massachusetts (US) and Ian Renfrew from UEA (UK), is published in Nature Geoscience on December 16, 2012.

Gary?s thought for the month.

As we wind to the end of the year, it is customary to reflect back on the last 12 months and I hope you enjoy our video which seeks to do just that.

As usual we will be donating a sum equal to what we would usually spend on corporate holiday cards to charities. This year we will split the money between 2 charities that are making a significant difference to our world through the use of language. First Planetary Flyby Occurred 50 Years Ago Today

Fifty years ago today (Dec. 14), NASA's Mariner 2 spacecraft made its closest approach to the planet Venus, marking the first-ever flyby of another planet.

Mariner 2 zoomed to within 21,564 miles (34,675 kilometers) of Venus?on Dec. 14, 1962, gathering a trove of data about Earth's hellishly hot sister planet. The probe took the first close-up measurements of Venus' scorching temperatures, for example, helping confirm scientists' suspicions that a runaway greenhouse effect had taken hold of the world.

Tracking Mariner 2's radio signals, researchers also calculated Venus' mass with unprecedented precision, NASA officials said.

The spacecraft's flyby also marked a proud moment for NASA and the United States, after a five-year stretch in which the Soviet Union had claimed all of the world's big space firsts. The Soviets successfully launched the first artificial satellite in 1957, sent a probe to the moon in 1959 and put the first human in space in 1961. [Video: Mariner 2's Venus Flyby]

"JPL has always attempted to do mighty things on behalf of NASA and our nation," Charles Elachi, director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory?in Pasadena, Calif., which managed Mariner 2's mission, said in a statement. "Achieving America's first 'first in space' is among the lab's proudest achievements."

Mariner 2 had a bumpy ride. Shortly after launch on Aug. 27, 1962, an electrical short caused the probe's rocket to roll, rendering it unresponsive to guidance commands. But the short circuit mysteriously healed itself about a minute later, NASA officials said.

Things got dicey during Mariner 2's cruise to Venus, too. A solar panel on the spacecraft stopped working on two separate occasions, and attitude-controlling gyroscopes misbehaved. Further, the probe's temperature rose dramatically as it approached Venus, causing managers to worry that Mariner 2 might be cooked before it could complete its mission.

But Mariner 2 overcame all of this, and the rest is history. In addition to lifting Venus' veil, the spacecraft's observations also confirmed the existence of the solar wind and enabled scientists to refine the value of the astronomical unit ? the distance from Earth to the sun, which is about 93 million miles (150 million km).

In the half-century after Mariner 2's close encounter, other spacecraft have further studied the second planet from the sun. The Soviet Union even landed a number of probes on Venus' surface, beginning with Venera 7 in 1970. But Mariner 2 will always have a special place in history.

"There will be other missions to Venus, but there will never be another first mission to Venus," Jack James of JPL, Mariner 2's project manager, said before his death in 2001.

Capitol Confidential ? Cuomo, others respond to Connecticut ...

Numerous elected officials and advocates are responding to the massacre of at least 26 people, 18 of them children, at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. We?ll post them as we receive them.

From Gov. Andrew Cuomo:

?I was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning in Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the innocent victims ? many of whom were young children ? whose lives were claimed by this senseless and horrific act of violence. During times of such unthinkable tragedy, all New Yorkers stand together with the people of our neighboring state to grieve the loss of life and help bear the pain and anguish that will be felt by so many in the weeks, months, and years to come.

?While we don?t have all the facts and our focus must be on the victims, this is yet another senseless and horrific act of violence involving guns. We as a society must unify and once and for all crack down on the guns that have cost the lives of far too many innocent Americans. Let this terrible tragedy finally be the wake-up call for aggressive action and I pledge my full support in that effort.?

From Senate Democratic Leader John Sampson:

?Our hearts go out to the children, parents, and community of Newtown, Connecticut. As a father, this is one of my worst fears and we must all work together to make sure these terrible events never happen again. Enough is enough.?

From Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver:

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the horrific shooting in Newton, Connecticut this morning. Our schools should be a safe and nurturing environment for our children and parents should never have to fear for their safety when they are learning. If ever there is a time to finally have a serious discussion about our country?s culture of violence that time is now.

From Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeff Klein:

?My thoughts and prayers are with the children, families, and victims of today?s devastating tragedy in Connecticut. Today?s news is a sorrowful reminder that horrifying acts of gun violence are all too common in our streets, our homes, and our schools. Heinous acts such as this must remain at the front of our minds as we continue to reevaluate the place of guns in our state and our society.?

From Attorney General Eric Schneiderman:

?Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the innocent victims of today?s horrific massacre. We stand with the people of Connecticut during this moment of unspeakable tragedy.?

From Rep. Charles Rangel:

?I join America to mourn for the innocent lives that were tragically taken away in this devastating shooting. We send our prayers for the parents and families of the victims as we share our grief over their loss. I stand with the nation in showing full support to the Newtown community as they cope with the shock and pain.

I strongly condemn this heinous crime that killed and wounded so many young beautiful children, as well as teachers and educators. Such abominable act has no place in our country. We cannot tolerate and allow a handful of people to terrorize our communities. ?

From Education Commissioner John King:

?There are no words to express the tremendous sense of loss and sadness we all feel right now. Our schools are meant to be safe havens where children can learn, free from fear and violence. On behalf of the entire Board of Regents and the State Education Department, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this horrific tragedy, as well as to their families and loved ones.?

From Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos:

There simply aren?t words that can express the sadness and shock of the senseless tragedy that took place this morning in Newtown, Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims of this heinous attack that has brought such heartbreak and grief to people in Connecticut and across the country.

From President Barack Obama, as delivered in a White House briefing:

This afternoon, I spoke with Governor Malloy and FBI Director Mueller. I offered Governor Malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation, and made it clear he will have every single resource that he needs to investigate this heinous crime, care for the victims, counsel their families.

We?ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. And each time I learn the news I react not as a President, but as anybody else would ? as a parent. And that was especially true today. I know there?s not a parent in America who doesn?t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.

The majority of those who died today were children ? beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them ? birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers ? men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.

So our hearts are broken today ? for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children?s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.

As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it?s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago ? these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. And we?re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.

This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we?ll tell them that we love them, and we?ll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans. And I will do everything in my power as President to help.

Because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need ? to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them, that the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their memories but also in ours.

May God bless the memory of the victims and, in the words of Scripture, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds.

Former Iraqi central bank chief rejects graft charges

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The former governor of Iraq's central bank on Saturday denied parliamentary charges of corruption on Saturday, saying he was the victim of a government campaign to try and control the autonomous bank's foreign reserves.

Iraq's cabinet last month ousted Sinan al-Shibibi after a parliamentary investigation into central bank officials accused of abusing the bank's dollar auctions.

Local authorities have issued arrest warrants for Shibibi, who has left the country, and other bank officials, a decision that has heightened investor concerns Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government is interfering with the bank's autonomy.

"I think the main problem was that the central bank did not fund the government because the law does not allow it," Shibibi told reporters, speaking from Geneva.

"The accusations and criticism ... are unjust and incomprehensible."

Shibibi did not say whether he will return to Baghdad to face the charges against him, which are being investigated by an independent integrity watchdog.

The allegations of corruption at the central bank are the latest chapter in a long-running dispute between the government, its allied lawmakers and the central bank board over the institution's autonomy.

A parliamentary commission last week said there had been violations in dollar sales by the bank for importing goods, false documents for importers, and a lack of control of how dollar auctions were monitored.

Maliki, a Shi'ite, last year won a court ruling that put the central bank and other independent bodies under more cabinet supervision, a move his opponents said would allow the Shi'ite premier to consolidate his power.

Iraq's political system has been mired in infighting among Shi'ite, Sunni Muslim and ethnic Kurdish blocks, some of whom accuse Maliki of failing to fulfill power-sharing agreements in the cross-sectarian government.

Corruption is rife in the OPEC nation as its oil industry rebuilds and foreign investors seek to reconstruct its infrastructure after years of war and sanctions, even before the 2003 invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.

Creative Writing Club at UHS

Ernest Hemmingway?s famous six word memoir ?for sale, baby shoes, never worn,? was one of many six word memoirs that made the members of Creative Writing Club (CWC) stop and think.
Although each member was moved by the amount of emotion and the simplicity inherent in the sentence, each member of CWC was affected in their own very different way by it.
However, the theme was pretty clear and easily agreed upon: Hemingway?s memoir speaks about the loss of a child.
CWC is a place for the students of Urbana High School to share their work and grow as writers. Each meeting is always exciting; you can never expect the same things to always happen.
CWC begins with students mingling and catching up, before everyone begins placing desks in a circle. This encourages involvement to the club and respect to those speaking. After a few short announcements, club sponsor Ms. Rachel Moyer begins the meeting with an introduction to a different style of writing, this week: 6 word memoirs/flash fiction.
Then, the members then take a few minutes to write something of their own and then share it. After each person finishes, the room goes around and gives creative and constructive criticism to the author.
By this time, most students will start leaving if they please, although most seemed to hover towards the front of the room and speak with Ms. Moyer; and sharing more of themselves with the members, who, to some, have become like a second family.
It is a friendly and caring environment.
?Everyone is heard,? says Ms. Moyer. ?[The members] are so receptive and encouraging.?
Freshman Vanessa Cano stated ?everyone is so deep, and everything is so well written that it is easy to compare your own experiences to the speaker.?
?It feels homey and safe, and easy to join at any time during the year.? says, club Vise President Sophomore Elizabeth Coffman-Mackey.
?Everyone is welcome and encouraged to share their work, and they?re never judged. I think that it?s the perfect place to create a style of writing for yourself, and to become comfortable in your type of writing.?
These activities, along with many others, are what you can expect at CWC meetings, every Thursday after school in room 2222.

Unexpected: Africa's Hotel Boom

NAIROBI, Kenya -- The rooftop pool at Nairobi's newest high-rise hotel juts out over the edge so swimmers can peer through the glass bottom eight stories down. A new champagne bar sits nearby. IPads with detailed wine descriptions serve as menus.

This is the face of new, high-end hotels in Africa. Nairobi has seen the construction of several upscale properties in recent years, as developers eye an increase in business travel to a continent with rising business prospects.

International hotel developers are planning nearly 40,000 new rooms across Africa in the coming years.

Travel and tourism in Africa generates about $164 billion a year, 9 percent of the continent's total GDP, said David Scowsill, president and chief executive of World Travel & Tourism Council. He said tourism generates almost 19 million jobs in Africa, 7.1 percent of all employment. And that business is expected to grow.

Africa's middle class is expected to soon begin leisure travel en masse, and an international forum held in Nairobi last week was packed with hotel executives because of this fact alone: Africa's middle class today numbers 300 million people but by 2050 will number 1 billion.

"Africa is the only region of the world where birth rates are above (population) replacement rates," Ian Goldin, a professor at Oxford, told the forum. "Its population is the fastest growing of all the continents and it has the youngest labor force. Notably, inequality on the continent is going down even as it rises in the rest of the world."

But hotel owners beware: The continent is still a maze of business challenges. Slow land acquisition. Slow government approval. Slow construction.

Christian Karaoglanian, chief development officer for French hotel group Accor, said one project has been under construction in Ethiopia for five years. Another property in Nigeria took three years longer than it should have.

"There is a lack of professional expertise. They don't necessarily have the expert people," Karaoglanian said.

Despite the challenges, Accor has 5,000 rooms under development or construction across Africa, but Karaoglanian said that for now Accor sees Asia as its more important growth market.

Moshi Perera, the general manager of the Sankara, the hotel with the rooftop pool, said that for a long time there was more demand than supply for high-end hotels in Nairobi. But hotels can become potential targets, and the Sankara has anti-ram blocks and high security walls. Business risks in Africa include terrorism and political instability.

"Security is key," said Alex Kyriakidis, Marriott's president and managing director for the Middle East and Africa, who noted business challenges amid the Arab Spring. "Egypt occupancy has crashed. This is the test that Kenya has to confront."

Kenya's last presidential election resulted in more than 1,000 violent deaths. The country's tourism minister, Danson Mwazo, told The Associated Press there is "absolutely zero chance" of violence during its next election in March.

The greatest prize in Africa for Marriott is domestic tourism, said Kyriakidis. Southern Africa will be the fastest growing region in the world for Marriott in the coming years.

It has room to grow on the continent. Of its 420,000 hotel rooms worldwide, only 4,000 ? 1 percent ? are in Africa, said Trevor Ward the managing director of W Hospitality Group.

More are coming. Ward said Hilton now has nine hotels and 3,380 rooms in the pipeline across Africa; Movenpick has 12 and 2,182; Radisson Blue has 14 and 3,429; Ibis has 19 and 2,632. Many of those developments are in North Africa.

Nigeria has the most hotels under development at 43, but those projects often take longer than they should to finish. An undersupply of hotels in Lagos has led to sky-high prices. A couple traveling with their daughter ? Dave and Arina McCarthy ? recently stayed at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.

"It's not cheap," Dave McCarthy said. "The pegged rate seems to be about $420 a night."

"If you're flying in for a couple of nights, $800 for a multinational company isn't a lot of money," he said. "As a tourist destination, $400 a night is a lot. ... People aren't going to choose to come here."

The delays caused by corruption and lack of construction skills in Nigeria makes the country unattractive to hotel investors who can build properties anywhere in the world, said Nick van Marken, an analyst in the travel sector at Deloitte.

"The potential (for Africa) is evident. The emerging middle class, rising GDP, all the numbers point in the right direction. The problem is there's a lack of transparency, and there's corruption," he said.

Kenya's Rift Valley and the country's 35,000 elephants are attractions no other country can offer, van Marken said.

"I think the good news is the mood is optimistic," he said. "If you're investing in Africa you're going to be pragmatic. Some investors might be worn down because of the difficulties, but most are upbeat."
